Sophie Mereau (1770-1806) war eine der ersten Berufsschriftstellerinnen in Deutschland. Mit ihrer Eheschließung mit Clemens Brentano gab sie ihre hart erarbeitete Unabhängigkeit jedoch wieder auf. In der 1789 erschienenen Erzählung »Marie« spiegelt sich dieser Lebensweg: Wie ihre Heldin war auch die Autorin hin- und hergerissen zwischen dem Bedürfnis nach einem selbstbestimmten Leben und dem Wunsch nach romantischem Gefühlsüberschwang.
