Lutheran Theology and the shaping of society: The Danish Monarchy as Example

From different perspectives this book studies the role of Reformation theology in the shaping of Danish society and the social dimensions of Lutheran confessional culture. The book develops an approach making it possible to draw strong conclusion about the social teaching of Luther and its impact on the development of the Danish society. It works on a conceptual level by analyzing the social dimensions of key Lutheran concepts and their translation into the doctrine of the three estates (church, household, and state), and on the level of lived experience of life within these three orders, not at least within the household forming the ideal form also for church and state. Thus the chapters in...

A History of Hegelianism in Golden Age Denmark, Tome II

This is the second volume in a three-volume work dedicated to exploring the influence of G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophical thinking in Golden Age Denmark. The work demonstrates that the largely overlooked tradition of Danish Hegelianism played a profound and indeed constitutive role in many spheres of the Golden Age culture. This second tome treats the most intensive period in the history of the Danish Hegel reception, namely, the years from 1837 to 1841. The main figure in this period is the theologian Hans Martensen who made Hegel’s philosophy a sensation among the students at the University of Copenhagen in the late 1830s. This period also includes the publication of Johan Ludvig Heiberg’s Hegelian journal, Perseus, and Frederik Christian Sibbern’s monumental review of it, which represented the most extensive treatment of Hegel’s philosophy in the Danish language at the time. During this period Hegel’s philosophy flourished in unlikely genres such as drama and lyric poetry. During these years Hegelianism enjoyed an unprecedented success in Denmark until it gradually began to be perceived as a dangerous trend.

From Both Sides of the Atlantic

This book is about those relatives that immigrated from Norway, Denmark and Germany, their history, culture and the difficulties they encountered living in their respective countries. It ranged from economic recessions, depressions, unemployment and lack of opportunity. Some experienced the ravages of World War II. They told horrific circumstances of parents and how it was seen through the eyes of young children. In all cases immigration seemed like a solution to the problems with a hope for a new and better life in Canada. In the many years that have elapsed, economic conditions have improved vastly and people are doing very well in the above mentioned countries.

Speaking from the Heart

In Speaking From the Heart Professor Shields uses examples from everyday life, contemporary culture and the latest research, to illustrate how culturally shared beliefs about emotion are used to shape our identities as women and men and exposes the historically shifting and tacit assumptions these beliefs are based on. This fascinating exploration of gender and emotion covers everything from nineteenth century ideals of womanhood, to baseball and the new man and is a must read for anyone interested in the way emotion effects our everyday lives.

This collected edition by experts from all over the world, reflects a multidisciplinary approach to marital captivity and shows a multifaceted view of this widespread phenomenon. Marital captivity is a social and human rights problem that occurs within religions or religious communities worldwide. It is defined as a situation in which one or both spouses, but predominantly the wife, is unable to terminate a religious marriage, consequently trapping that spouse within the marriage against her or his will. As such it is a form of forced marriage and violence against women. Because of its severe social, legal, and economic implications, the phenomenon is approached from different perspectives: anthropological, sociological and legal. In thirteen chapters the book discusses the practice of marital captivity and human rights approaches, solutions and best practices to marital captivity. It is therefore a must-read for civil society, academics, legal practitioners such as solicitors, the judiciary, notaries and registrars, policy makers, and all other practitioners and ngo's concerned with family issues and violence against women.
