Architecture for Astronauts
Living and working in extra-terrestrial habitats means being potentially vulnerable to very harsh environmental, social, and psychological conditions. With the stringent technical specifications for launch vehicles and transport into space, a very tight framework for the creation of habitable space is set. These constraints result in a very demanding “partnership” between the habitat and the inhabitant. This book is the result of researching the interface between people, space and objects in an extra-terrestrial environment. The evaluation of extra-terrestrial habitats in comparison to the user’s perspective leads to a new framework, comparing these buildings from the viewpoint of human activity. It can be used as reference or as conceptual framework for the purpose of evaluation. It also summarizes relevant human-related design directions. The work is addressed to architects and designers as well as engineers.
Visual Catalog: Greg Lynn's Studio at the University of Applied Arts Vienna
Kristy Balliet and Brennan Buck are architects and have both worked as assistants to Greg Lynn. This is their ‘visual catalog’ of the Lynn Studio’s work over the last five years. It is a project-based visual catalog of design innovations that were created with Lynn’s students. Each chapter describes an exactly defined formal, aesthetic or atmospheric building block and its cultural context. The descriptions comprise introductions, reference images, theoretical contributions and the student’s projects for the studio. The Visual Catalog offers a unique insight into Greg Lynn’s design and teaching practice. Since the 1990s, Lynn has been considered the pioneer of a new generation of architects whose primary tool are computers. Going against the trend towards reduced, minimalist renderings in current architecture publications, the Studio Lynn Visual Catalog is a high-gloss monograph overflowing with graphical material that can be understood as an inspiring manual for students and practicing architects.
Biomimetics in Architecture
The purpose of investigating the overlaps between architecture and biology is neither to draw borders or make further distinctions nor to declare architecture alive, but to clarify what is currently happening in the blurred fields, and to investigate the emerging discipline of „biomimetics in architecture" [Architekturbionik]. An overview of the present state of research in the relatively young scientific field of biomimetics shows the potential of the approach. The new discipline aims at innovation by making use of the subtle systems and solutions in nature having evolved within millions of years. Approaches that have been taken to transfer nature's principles to architecture have provided successful developments. The new approach presented in this book transfers the abstract concept of life onto built environment. Strategic search for life's criteria in architecture delivers a new view of architectural achievements and makes the innovative potential visible, which has not been exploited yet. A selection of case studies illustrates the diversity of starting points: from vernacular architecture to space exploration.
The Other Architecture
How does the architectural design become reality? After a successful presentation come the phase of tenders and that of their realization. Design must now be reformulated into working drawings. That’s exactly what Liebing, a renowned expert for plan views and detailed views, calls „the other architecture”. Working drawings constitute the basis for the real construction itself. In the firms, mostly young architects are charged with these tasks. But during education, this topic is often addressed insufficiently. Architecture in Vienna 1850 to 1930
From the Votivkirche and the Historicism of Vienna’s Ringstrasse via the secessionist movement and Jugendstil to the New Objectivity and Vienna’s Werkbund Housing Estate: 100 objects, approximately 400 coloured illustrations and five proposals for a delectable architectural tour. At last a sound art-historical guide to the architecture of Vienna from 1850 to 1930. Three generations of architects created Vienna’s most important buildings. First and foremost, Otto Wagner, who moved from historicism to become one of the leading secessionist architects, finally paving the way for the New Objectivity. A wide spectrum that not only covers the buildings of Wagner, Hoffmann and Loos, but also lesser known ones as well.
Rob|Arch 2012
This volume collects about 20 contributions on the topic of robotic construction methods. It is a proceedings volume of the robarch2012 symposium and workshop, which will take place in December 2012 in Vienna. Contributions will explore the current status quo in industry, science and practitioners. The symposium will be held as a biennial event. This book is to be the first of the series, comprising the current status of robotics in architecture, art and design.
Geometry of Light
Arkan Zeytinoglu calls his projects "built theory." Since many years, he has dealt with "the geometry of light", which describes best his special approach to architecture. But as an architect, Zeytinoglu, who studied at University of Technology TU Graz under Günther Domenig and later on at Cooper Union in New York, devotes himself mainly to building activities. Since his office’s foundation in 1995, realizations have included works in the field of hotels and resorts, gastronomy, and luxury residences. In May 2010, the internationally much-noticed Austrian pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai (ARGE SPAN & Zeytinoglu) was inaugurated. The book contains all essential realizations as well as a work list and an outlook at the buildings to be completed soon.
