Stanley Mouse is responsible for some of the most enduring & best-loved images to emerge from the counterculture of the '60s. Mouse's art captured the decade's pop look, & was instrumental in linking the art scene to music, the other major art form of the '60s generation. Best known for his posters & album covers, Mouse has done album art for the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, & many others. The Steve Miller Band's "Book of Dreams" album earned a Grammy Award for Best Graphic Art. His work for the Grateful Dead is probably his most memorable art; with Alton Kelley, he designed the Dead's "skull & roses" emblem as well as many of their most famous posters including the "Blue Rose" poster for the closing of Winterland. FREEHAND is a major retrospective of this gifted artist's work. Along with his music artwork, FREEHAND includes his early "Monster Car" paintings--described by one critic as a cross between Mad Magazine & Paul Klee--as well as the now famous Zig Zag Man. This is not merely a catalog of Mouse's famed poster art, but a comprehensive look at his artistic roots & full flower of his genius, including 96 pages of full-color reproductions of his best work.

His influential work during that era captured the color, fun, mystery, passion and creatively liberating experimentalism of those tumultuous times. But this book also explores...

The Art of Rock

  • Categories: Art

The best-selling visual history of the rock concert poster, now available at an irresistible price Electric, outrageous, erotic, rebellious—rock concert posters are the visual equivalent of the music they advertise. The Art of Rock traces the history of this energizing art form from the bold letterpress posters advertising Elvis’s early shows, through the multicolored fantasies of the psychedelic era, to the avant-garde collages of new wave and punk. More than 1,500 posters and other graphics—tickets, backstage passes, buttons, handbills—are presented in their original blazing color (or their stark black and white, as the case may be). The text features dozens of exclusive interviews with musicians, concert promoters, and the poster artists themselves, including legends like Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, or Wes Wilson—who also designed the cover of this book. A visual journey through thirty years of rock and roll, as well as a valuable reference, The Art of Rock is an essential volume for every music lover (and art lover).

Critical writings and commentary by the Los Angeles based artist Mike Kelley. The work of artist Mike Kelley (b. 1954) embraces performance, installation, drawing, painting, video, and sculpture. Drawing distinctively on high art and vernacular traditions, including historical research, popular culture, and psychology, Kelley came to prominence in the 1980s with a series of sculptures composed of craft materials. His recent work offers dialogues with architecture and with repressed memory syndrome, and a sustained inquiry into his own aesthetic and social history. The subjects on which Kelley has written are as varied as his artistic media. They include the work of fellow artists, sound, car...
