In the Polish Secret War
Born in the Polish village of Gaj in 1923, Marian Mazgaj was a teenager when Germany invaded his country and launched Poland into the combat of World War II. Too young to join the Polish army, within a few years he became a member of the Sandomierz Flying Commando Unit, a unit which merged with the "Jedrus" Polish underground group. This memoir provides a vivid record of Mazgaj's career in the military. The Sandomierz Flying Commando Unit and the "Jedrus" underground were actively engaged in fighting the Nazi forces in Poland during World War II, and the author provides a first-hand account of the groups' roles in attacking and disarming German military units; destroying the enemy's grain warehouses and receiving air drops of weapons, ammunition, and explosives from the Allies. He also describes the incorporation of his partisan group into the Home Army, whereby he and his comrades became the Fourth Company in the Second Regiment of the Second Division, gaining strength and destroying many more German units.
How Does My Country Grow?
Written by a former World Bank economist, How Does My Country Grow? presents growth policy lessons from the author's first-hand experience in Poland, Kenya, India, and Russia. The book argues that country economic analysis is in effect a separate, integrative branch of economics. It covers the period 1990-2008 and documents lessons from two episodes: the historic transition in Central and Eastern Europe, which began in 1990; and the unexpectedly positive response of emerging markets to their own crises of 1997-2001, which enabled them to weather the global financial crisis of 2008-09 virtually unscathed. The emerging market response to the crises in the shape of comprehensive self-insurance with its implication of self-financed growth, topics to which the author contributed at the World Bank, are covered in the final part of the book. While the discussion is tilted towards developing countries, the insights are applicable to the advanced economies, many of which today are in the throes of their own growth-cum-sovereign debt crises.
Democracy and Efficiency in the Economic Enterprise
The collapse of central planning was hailed as evidence of the economic and moral superiority of capitalism over any possible alternative. The essays in this book challenge that claim. The case for more democratic forms of enterprise management is considered from a variety of viewpoints. One chapter deals with the philosophical justification for enterprise democracy. The remaining chapters are devoted to the question of efficiency, which has been central to economic debates about ownership and control. The orthodox belief amongst economists is that any shift to more democratic forms of enterprise control would be unworkable. The essays in this book provide a thorough theoretical and empirical critique of this orthodoxy.

The Great Rebirth
The fall of communism 25 years ago transformed the political and economic landscape in more than two dozen countries across Europe and Asia. In this volume political leaders, scholars, and policymakers assess the lessons learned from the “great rebirth” of capitalism, highlighting the policies that were the most successful in helping countries make the transition to stable and prosperous market economies, as well as those cases of countries reverting to political and economic authoritarianism. Enterprise Exit Processes in Transition Economies
This volume gathers together a collection of essays integrated by two central themes: the comparative economic performance of different economic systems (centralized socialism, reformed socialism, competitive socialism), and the transition from socialism to capitalism under newly established pluralistic political systems in Central and Eastern Europe. Most of the essays are based on the first-hand experience of the author in stabilizing an economy in an early stage of hyperinflation and in transforming it into a competitive capitalist market economy.
