Crisis Management in the European Union

Crisis Management in the European Union

In less than a decade, Europe has witnessed a series of large-scale natural disasters and two major terrorist attacks. Growing concern about the trans-national effects of these incidents has caused the EU Member States to seek more multilateral cooperation. As a result, a system of common arrangements for handling large-scale emergencies or disasters has emerged, which, due to its quick and ad-hoc development, may seem almost impenetrable to newcomers to the field. This book seeks to provide a much-needed overview of disaster and crisis management systems in the EU. It provides a basic understanding of how EU policy has evolved, the EU’s mandate, and above all, a concise and hands-on descr...

The Hostages of the Northmen

"The aim of this book is to investigate the taking and giving of hostages in peace processes during the Viking Age and early Middle Ages in Scandinavia and adjacent areas. Scandinavia has been absent in previous research about hostages from the perspectives of legal and social history, which has mostly focused on Antiquity (the Roman Empire), Continental Germanic cultures, such as the Merovingian realm, and Anglo-Saxon England. The examples presented are from confrontations between Scandinavians and other peoples in which the hostage giving and taking was displayed as a ritual act and thus became symbolically important. Hostages were a vital part of the peace processes and used as resources by both sides in the 'areas of communication' within the 'areas of confrontation'. Literary texts as well as runic inscriptions, picture stones, place names, and personal names are used as source material." Crises and Integration in European Banking Union

This book examines how efforts to exert accountability in crises affect public trust in governing institutions. Using Sweden as the case study, this book provides a framework to analyse accountability in crises and looks at how this affects trust in government. Crises test the fabric of governing institutions. Threatening core societal values, they force elected officials and public servants to make consequential decisions under pressure and uncertainty. Public trust in governing institutions is intrinsically linked to the ability to hold decision-makers accountable for the crucial decisions they make. The book presents empirical evidence from examination of the general bases for accountabil...

"Till we fall" is a modern fairy tale for grown-ups. So tenderly is magic woven into the real-world fabric of this extraordinary story that it becomes natural and plausible. Among the author's role models in the genre were Erin Morgenstern, Eowyn Ivey, Ali Shaw and Audrey Niffenegger. Sophie is out for a walk in Hamburg's Municipal Park with James, her Labrador Retriever. She encounters Oliver, a young man sitting on a tree stump crying bitterly. He seems to be desperate. When she asks him what's wrong, he claims to be the Fall personified, and that he is frantic because he has lost the ability to usher in the season and all the changes that come with it. It is already October. The leaves should have started to fall long ago. If Oliver won't succeed in finally initiating fall, all of nature is in jeopardy. Sophie decides to help the stranger. Together they try to find a way for Oliver to regain his power. It doesn't take long for Sophie to fall in love with him. During their search, they discover not only the true nature of seasons, but also how the seasons relate to all human feelings.

The Integrated Architecture Framework Explained

This book captures and communicates the wealth of architecture experience Capgemini has gathered as a member of The Open Group – a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium formed by major industry players – in developing, deploying, and using its “Integrated Architecture Framework” (IAF) since its origination in 1993. Today, many elements of IAF have been incorporated into the new version 9 of TOGAF, the related Open Group standard. The authors, all working on and with IAF for many years, here provide a full reference to IAF and a guide on how to apply it. In addition, they describe in detail the relations between IAF and the architecture standards TOGAF and Archimate and other development or process frameworks like ITIL, CMMI, and RUP. Their presentation is targeted at architects, project managers, and process analysts who have either considered or are already working with IAF – they will find many roadmaps, case studies, checklists, and tips and advice for their daily work.
