A History of the Women's FA Cup Final

A History of the Women's FA Cup Final is an exhaustive account of fifty finals, from the first (on a bumpy field inside an athletics stadium) to the fiftieth (at Wembley, televised to millions), complete with match reports and interviews with some of the greatest players ever to grace the pitch. Every women's FA Cup Final goal scorer can be confirmed in one place for the first time, and the achievements of previously unknown record holders can at last be fully recognised. But this is more than just a stats book; it is a tribute to the pioneers of the game, who fought to overturn a fifty-year ban on female players and who paved the way for the incredible game we have today.

Language, Culture, and the Embodied Mind

There is an odd contradiction at the heart of language and culture learning: Language and culture are, so to speak, two sides of a single coin—language reflects the thinking, values and worldview of its speakers. Despite this, there is a persistent split between language and culture in the classroom. Foreign language pedagogy is often conceptualized in terms of gaining knowledge and practicing skills, while cultural learning goals are often conceptualized in abstract terms, such as awareness or criticality. This book helps resolve this dilemma. Informed by brain and mind sciences, its core message is that language and culture learning can both be seen as a single, interrelated process—th...

Intercultural Dialogue Through Children's Literature

This textbook is based on an academic monograph entitled Intercultural dialogue in practice: Managing value judgment in foreign language education. (Houghton, 2012) that resulted from a PhD thesis supervised by Michael Byram at Durham University. It contains a series of selected extracts relevant to the exploration of intercultural dialogue through children's literature. The extracts are accompanied by a children's story entitled Lossie Leppur and the Quing which was also written by the author to explore issues related to intercultural dialogue, which was published independently in 2015, with full colour illustrations by Barbara Dessi and graphic design by Kate Austria. Together, they form a useful resource book upon which teachers can creatively draw through independent syllabus design and task development. Houghton, S.A. As people move into the new era of the twenty-first century, they will have more and more opportunities to communicate and interact with others using foreign languages. While this will naturally generate wide-ranging intercultural experience, people may not be alert to it in everyday life, and teachers may not know how to address the issues that arise. This book starts by exploring what it means to be intercultural from different theoretical standpoints, before contrasting ways in which people do (or do not) become intercultural in both tutored and untutored ways, inside and outside the classroom. The main purpose of this book is to introduce the concept of interculturality, to examine how it can emerge in an unplanned way and to consider ways in which it can be more systematically addressed through education, particularly through foreign language education.
