New Business Models and Value Creation: A Service Science Perspective

The contemporary economic landscape features the prevalence of the service sector in economic systems, the pervasive servitisation of manufacturing, innovations in traditional business models and new value creation models, thanks to the new possibilities offered by the web, ICT and other enabling technologies. In this evolving context, this book provides qualified contributions on the topic of service science from a managerial perspective. A multidisciplinary perspective is adopted, dealing with both the structural–technological and dynamic–relational aspects of managing complexity. In addressing the contribution that service science can make to business value creation, this book covers ...

For one man, football is more than just a fantasy... As seen on ESPN's "Cold Pizza" Fantasy football -- one of America's most popular, and profitable, virtual pastimes -- became a way of life for sports humorist and author Mark St. Amant. Utterly fed up with never having won his league championship, St. Amant abandoned a successful advertising career to make fantasy football his full-time job, embarking on a sprawling reconnaissance mission to discover what really makes this game, and its 20 million players, tick. "Committed" is the result of St. Amant's ranting, relentless, and strategic pursuit of his own obsession. In this wickedly funny and deeply informative work, St. Amant offers readers an all-access sideline pass to his wild, unprecedented fantasy football season, and to the hobby itself. From its humble beginnings in a New York hotel in 1962 to a multibillion-dollar business today, from local and online leagues to high-stakes, cutthroat Las Vegas competitions, St. Amant lays bare the facts, figures, and fanaticism of fantasy football in all its multidimensional glory.

Services are key activities in a globalized economy and they also underlie the quality of life of local residents. The advanced work presented in this book was selected from the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Serviceology (ICServ2015), held July 7–9, 2015, in San Jose, CA, USA. The conference was supported by the Society for Serviceology. The society was established in 2012 in Japan to explore the scientific systematization of services and to promote technological developments for solutions to industrial issues. This book provides a useful general guide to the state of the art in the theory and practice of services. It can also serve as a valuable reference book for researchers in a wide range of fields from engineering to marketing and economics.

Uncertainty Management in Information Systems

Uncertainty Management in Information Systems

As its title suggests, "Uncertainty Management in Information Systems" is a book about how information systems can be made to manage information permeated with uncertainty. This subject is at the intersection of two areas of knowledge: information systems is an area that concentrates on the design of practical systems that can store and retrieve information; uncertainty modeling is an area in artificial intelligence concerned with accurate representation of uncertain information and with inference and decision-making under conditions infused with uncertainty. New applications of information systems require stronger capabilities in the area of uncertainty management. Our hope is that lasting ...

The split of Orayvi, the largest Hopi town, in 1906, continues to resonate as a profound event in Puebloan cultural history, exemplary for anthropological explanations of fission in small-scale, kin-based human societies. Multiple hypotheses have been offered (sociological, materialist, ideological, and agential), each pointing to alternative, often mutually exclusive, causes. But effective analysis of the split crucially depends upon accurate data and apposite conceptual tools. The received picture of Orayvi, both empirically and analytically, is seriously flawed, notably owing to neglect of the archival record. With particular attention to demography, social forms, and material conditions,...

Drug-Resistant Epilepsies

More than 12 million people with epilepsy have seizures that cannot be controlled by antiepileptic drugs. The term "drug-resistance" is abundantly used in the epilepsy literature but the definitions proposed differ considerably. It is used indifferently in a number of different settings: as a criterion for selection of patients eligible for new antiepileptic drug trials, for the selection of surgical candidates, for the design of epidemiological studies, for the design of studies on quality of life, for the definition of the epileptic encephalopathies (in comparison to more benign epilepsy syndromes), to mention but a few. As a result, available studies are usually not comparable and referral to epilepsy specialists is unacceptably delayed. The present volume of Progress in Epileptic Disorders includes several focused chapters on all issues relating to drug-resistance and offers the basis for a consensus on a clinically meaningful core definition.

This writing was inspired by my reunion with four old friends that had spent the first grade through high school together, reunited after fifty two years! It was the nostalgia generated at the dinner party that made me realize I had to preserve my collection of dreams and aspirations, travels and accomplishments, so that family and friends would know where I came from, how I got here and who I am! The chronologies of the events in my life are not especially significant in terms of fame or fortune, but important to me, none the less! It is for this reason that I want to record the people and places that were meaningful in my life, and to share my love for them all!
