Balkan Memories
This book gives an insight into the media constructions of historical remembrance reflecting transnational, national or nationalistic forms of politics. Authors from post-Yugoslavia and neighbouring countries focus on the diverse transnational (such as Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav etc.) and national (such as Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian etc.) memory cultures in South-Eastern Europe, their interference and rivalry. They examine constructions of memory in different media from the 19th century to recent wars. These include longue durée images, breaks and gaps, selection and suppression, traumatic events and the loss of memory, nostalgia, false memory, reactivation, rituals and traces of memory.
Ethnic Mobilization, Violence, and the Politics of Affect
This book offers an unprecedented account of the Serb Democratic Party’s origins and its political machinations that culminated in Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II. Within the first two years of its existence, the nationalist movement led by the infamous genocide convict Radovan Karadzic, radically transformed Bosnian society. It politically homogenized Serbs of Bosnia-Herzegovina, mobilized them for the Bosnian War, and violently carved out a new geopolitical unit, known today as Republika Srpska. Through innovative and in-depth analysis of the Party’s discourse that makes use of the recent literature on affective cognition, the book argues that the movement’s production of existential fears, nationalist pride, and animosities towards non-Serbs were crucial for creating Serbs as a palpable group primed for violence. By exposing this nationalist agency, the book challenges a commonplace image of ethnic conflicts as clashes of long-standing ethnic nations.

Dieses Buch ist ein Geschenk meines 2021 verstorbenen Freundes Stevan Tontic an mich. Wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod schrieb er mir begeistert, dass er eine Auswahl einzelner Gedichte aus meinem lyrischen Werk übersetzen möchte. Ich war damals überglücklich. Ich überliess ihm die Auswahl. Er, der Lyriker und Übersetzer, hat gut gewählt. Ich bin tief befriedigt. Als ich ihn auf einem internationalen Poesiefestival, den Petar-Kocic-Tagen, 2010 in Banja Luka in Bosnien und Herzegowina näher kennen lernte, ahnte ich nicht, wie sehr er meine Sicht auf die Welt und auf mich selbst verändern würde. Alle Erlebnisse danach haben mir die Augen auf den Balkan und auf meine Seele geöffnet. Das ist sein Werk an mir. Dafür bin ich ihm dankbar.
