Maxwell's Demon

This autumn, life is catching up with Thomas Quinn. Five years ago, his sometime friend Andrew Black wrote a mystery novel that sold a million copies and then disappeared. Now could it be that Quinn is being stalked by the hero of Black’s book? His wife, Imogen, usually has the answers, but she’s working on the other side of the world and talking to her on webcam just isn’t the same. Quinn finds himself in a world that might well be coming apart at the seams. If he can find Black, he might start finding answers. Maxwell’s Demon forges an entirely new blend of mystery—somewhere between detective fiction, ghost story and philosophical quest. Providing the same white-knuckle thrills as Hall’s first novel, The Raw Shark Texts, this new book is also a freewheeling investigation into the magic power locked inside the alphabet, love through the looking glass, the bond between parents and children and, at its heart, the quest for meaning in a world that, with each passing season, seems to become more chaotic and untidy.

Take your healing to a higher level. You are looking for answers. You've got challenges in your life that you would like to solve. You've probably tried many possible solutions already so I'm going to be frank: most of the advice in the Self-help Industry doesn't work very well. And there are three good reasons for this. Most self-help advice is trying to get you to change your behaviors, such as how you eat or exercise, or to change what you think or feel. This advice is way too superficial to treat the real roots of your problems. Your lifestyle behaviors are symptoms of deeper issues that need to change. Most advice doesn't work well with how your unconscious mind works. Your unconscious ...

The Quantum Hall Effect

After a foreword by Klaus von Klitzing, the first chapters of this book discuss the prehistory and the theoretical basis as well as the implications of the discovery of the Quantum Hall effect on superconductivity, superfluidity, and metrology, including experimentation. The second half of this volume is concerned with the theory of and experiments on the many body problem posed by fractional effect. Specific unsolved problems are mentioned throughout the book and a summary is made in the final chapter. The quantum Hall effect was discovered on about the hundredth anniversary of Hall's original work, and the finding was announced in 1980 by von Klitzing, Dorda and Pepper. Klaus von KIitzing was awarded the 1985 Nobel prize in physics for this discovery.

The Guncle

From the author of Lily and the Octopus comes a moving and deeply funny novel about a once-famous sitcom star who is left to care for his niece and nephew after an unexpected family tragedy. That is, he loves spending time with them … in small doses, with their parents there to handle the tears and tricky questions. So when tragedy strikes and Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian, he is, honestly, overwhelmed. Our own stories are shaped by the way we see the world. Another set of lenses is a book about relationships. The relationship we have with ourselves. The relationship we have with others. The relationship we have with the world around us. Stories surround us everywhere and the heroes and heroines of those stories are right with us in every walk of life. If we choose to look for them they will appear, yet it takes a different kind of looking. If we look at a familiar world with new eyes, we will see these extraordinary people and the lessons they quietly teach us in their everyday living. When we see through the eyes of the other and find some balance in the view through these differing lenses, we gain clarity and understanding. Is there any better way to build a world together?
