A Fascinating Investigation of Industry’s Modern Ruins and the "Deindustrial Sublime."
In everyday life we depend upon, interact with, influence are influenced by many people in situations that range from brief single encounters to the special relationships we form with family and close friends. Social interactions such as these are just a part of what make up social psychology, the study of human social behaviour and thought. In 'Social Psychology', the authors have incorporated the most recent theoretical developments and research findings and accounted for more than a decade of growth and expansion in the discipline since the publication of Pennington's 'Essential Social Psychology' (from which this book is descended). The result is a wholly fresh textbook that provides a c...
Since the 1970s, the closure of mines, mills, and factories has marked a rupture in working-class lives. The Deindustrialized World interrogates the process of industrial ruination, from the first impact of layoffs in metropolitan cities, suburban areas, and single-industry towns to the shock waves that rippled outward, affecting entire regions, countries, and beyond. Part 1 examines the ruination of former workplaces and the failing health and injured bodies of industrial workers. Part 2 br...

Anna wakes up, but remembers nothing. An old trunk and a portrait on the wall of her study are the only clues to a past she must now reconstruct. Diaries and bundled letters tied with faded ribbons from eight Italian girls reveal the trials and deprivations of World War II, Italy. After the discovery of these writings, Anna befriends the stranger in the mirror; thus unraveling the truth about the eight young women in war-torn Italy whose lives were fortuitously intertwined in the 60's in San Francisco, resulting in a lifelong friendship. This novel is in part inspired by actual events during World War II.
This collection explores the intersections of oral history and environmental history. Oral history offers environmental historians the opportunity to understand the ways people’s perceptions, experiences and beliefs about environments change over time. In turn, the insights of environmental history challenge oral historians to think more critically about the ways an active, more-than-human world shapes experiences and people. The integration of these approaches enables us to more fully and critically understand the ways cultural and individual memory and experience shapes human interactions with the more-than-human world, just as it enables us to identify the ways human memory, identity and experience is moulded by the landscapes and environments in which people live and labour. It includes contributions from Australia, India, the UK, Canada and the USA.
