Karel Marten's work occupies a unique place in the present European art and design landscape. While working in the tradition of Dutch modernism, he maintains distance from the main developments of his time: from both the practices of routinized Modernism and the facile reactions against it. His work is personal and experimental, while at the same time publicly answerable. This book presents Martens graphic design oeuvre in reproductions of startling fidelity, and described in informal captions. Printed on uncoated paper and Chinese-bound, the book itself has a compelling tactile quality. For this long-awaited second edition, twenty-four pages have been added to cover Marten's most recent work.

The Dawn of Dutch

The Low Countries are famous for their radically changing landscape over the last 1,000 years. Like the landscape, the linguistic situation has also undergone major changes. In Holland, an early form of Frisian was spoken until, very roughly, 1100, and in parts of North Holland it disappeared even later. The hunt for traces of Frisian or Ingvaeonic in the dialects of the western Low Countries has been going on for around 150 years, but a synthesis of the available evidence has never appeared. The main aim of this book is to fill that gap. It follows the lead of many recent studies on the nature and effects of language contact situations in the past. The topic is approached from two different angles: Dutch dialectology, in all its geographic and diachronic variation, and comparative Germanic linguistics. In the end, the minute details and the bigger picture merge into one possible account of the early and high medieval processes that determined the make-up of western Dutch.

Controversy and Challenge

In this study the engagement of scholars in theology and religious studies with Freudian psychoanalysis is examined. The book focuses on the explicit or implicit theological ideas and aims that have determined its reception. The analysis includes a review of Freud's theories as suggestions for reconfigurations of psychoanalysis are made in order to further theorize on concepts or fields of attention that are important in theology and religious studies. The aim of this double critical review is to establish what the theoretical potential of Freud's psychoanalysis might be.

Children and Society

The eight essays in this volume were written in response to a request for critical comments on early childhood policies and on particularly controversial subjects. The essays cover eight topics: (1) day care problems, including short- and long-term effects on children of different ages, policy questions, developmental issues, and evaluation criteria; (2) education and health care integration, focusing upon maternal and child health care, preschool education, and children with special needs; (3) women, children, and child care centers in the Netherlands, focusing upon parent relationships with child care centers and on government legislation regarding child care centers; (4) social policy and...
