This book shows that agglomeration economies, new industrial clusters, and Japanese multinational firms’ location are particularly important for the Japanese manufacturing industry in Japan and East Asia. For that industry, the author first estimated the flexible translog production function using four-digit SIC industry panel data and panel data of the indices of Ellison and Glaeser (1997) agglomeration with the same industry and coagglomeration with different industry groups for 1985–2000. Spatial Economic Modelling of Megathrust Earthquake in Japan
This book presents an evaluation of the impacts of megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis on regional economies and subsequent reconstruction, as well as regional revitalization by the spatial economic model and dynamic macro and regional computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. Landownership and Residential Land Use in Urban Economies
A basic model of residential land use is proposed, in which a group of city residents is assumed to jointly own a circular area of land extending from the central business district. This basic model then allows the existence and uniqueness of the land-use equilibrium to be shown, as well as the effects of land ownership, household income, and population. By extending this model to an arbitrary subset of the city land and by introducing a crowding externalities variable, the effects of land ownership on the land-use equilibrium are examined using comparative statistics. Nonlinear Filters
Nonlinear and nonnormal filters are introduced and developed. Traditional nonlinear filters such as the extended Kalman filter and the Gaussian sum filter give biased filtering estimates, and therefore several nonlinear and nonnormal filters have been derived from the underlying probability density functions. The density-based nonlinear filters introduced in this book utilize numerical integration, Monte-Carlo integration with importance sampling or rejection sampling and the obtained filtering estimates are asymptotically unbiased and efficient. By Monte-Carlo simulation studies, all the nonlinear filters are compared. Finally, as an empirical application, consumption functions based on the rational expectation model are estimated for the nonlinear filters, where US, UK and Japan economies are compared.
Understanding and Interpreting Economic Structure
In 1976, volume 116 of the Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems appeared in the library of the University of Illinois. The title of the book, Input-Output Analysis and the Structure of Income Distribution was sufficiently intriguing to one of the present editors (Hewings) to command attention. Some years later, during the First World Congress of the Regional Science Association in Cambridge Massachusetts in 1980, Madden and Batey presented some of their work using their now familiar demographic-economic modeling system. Discussion ensued about the relationship between this system, Miyazawa's formulation and the social accounting matrices most closely associated with the work of Stone. During a year's residence at the University of Illinois, Batey was able to produce a valuable typology of multipliers that began the process of integrating these several modeling systems into a coherent package. Thereafter, a number of regional scientists have exploited the ideas and insights proposed by Miyazawa, especially the notion of the interrelational income multiplier and the ideas of internal and external multipliers.

Economics of Agglomeration
