This report calls for a better understanding of the effects of pharmaceutical residues in the environment, greater international collaboration and accountability distribution, and policy actions to prevent and remedy emerging concerns. Laboratory and field tests show traces of oral contraceptives causing the feminisation of fish and amphibians, and residues of psychiatric drugs altering fish behaviour. Antimicrobial resistance, linked to the overuse of antibiotics, has rapidly escalated into a global health crisis. Unless adequate measures are taken to manage the risks, pharmaceutical residues will increasingly be released into the environment as ageing populations, advances in healthcare, and intensification of meat and fish production spur the demand for pharmaceuticals worldwide. The report outlines a collective, life‑cycle approach to managing pharmaceuticals in the environment. A policy mix of source‑directed, use‑orientated and end‑of‑pipe measures, involving several policy sectors, can help to improve health and protect the environment.
Neurotrauma in Multiple Choice Questions is the FIRST review book to use the multiple-choice question format in neurosurgical trauma. Students of neurosurgery, the resident, the fellow, the younger neurosurgeon preparing for exams or practice, and even the later stage neurosurgeon are the target audience of this book. The information in this work is in accordance with the most up-to-date best practice evidence, with a style that mirrors the format adopted by the majority of local, regional, and international board examinations. The strategy and format of the questions provide a stepwise progression from definition to surgical decision-making, to a comprehensive and concise overview of neurological trauma.
The history of chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences is an impressive success story. The products of chemical and pharmaceutical industries are present eve- where in our everyday life. They help to pursue the modern way of living and they contribute to our high standard of living and safety, mobility, communication te- nologies, food, health, textiles and drinking water treatment, among many others. These products are labeled under the categories: pharmaceuticals, pesticides, det- gents, fertilizers, dyes, paints, preservatives, food additives and personal care pr- ucts, to name a few. Within these categories, groups of chemicals with similar structures can be found. However, often groups of...
Most studies of bacterial or fungal infectious diseases focus separately on the pathogenic microbe, the host response, or the characterization of therapeutic compounds. Compartmentalization of pathogenesis-related research into an analysis of the “pathogen”, the “host,” or the “antimicrobial compound” has largely been dictated by the lack of model systems in which all of these approaches can be used simultaneously, as well as by the traditional view that microbiology, immunology, and chemical biology and pharmacology are separate disciplines. An increasing number of workers from different fields have turned to insects, fish, worms and other model hosts as facile, ethically expedi...

With the growing breadth and complexity of TB efforts today comes a greater range of concerns associated with the ethics of action, inaction and specific approaches to clinical, public health and research interventions. In 2006, the documented emergence of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB),2 including a dramatic and lethal outbreak in South Africa, brought forward urgent issues of public health ethics given the imposition in some programs of involuntary detention of persons suspected and/or confirmed of being ill with drug-resistant TB under the justification of public safety. In a linked effort, the Stop TB Partnership agreed to establish a TB and Human Rights Task Force in 2...
Traumatic brain injury is one of the most difficult and challenging management problems facing clinicians. Research is increasingly clarifying the underlying physiological mechanisms involved in neuronal damage, offering the chance of better methods of diagnosis and treatment. This second edition of Head Injury contains detailed coverage of basic me
The book provides a fascinating overview about current and sophisticated developments in applied entomology that are powered by molecular biology and that can be summarized under a novel term: insect biotechnology. By analogy with the application of powerful molecular biological tools in medicine (red biotechnology), plant protection (green biotechnology) and industrial processing (white biotechnology), insect biotechnology (yellow biotechnology) provides novel tools and strategies for human welfare and nutrition. Insect Biotechnology has emerged as a prospering discipline with considerable economic potential, and encompasses the use of insect model organisms and insect-derived molecules in medical research as well as in modern plant protection measures.
