The Sermon on the Mount in the Light of the Temple

A Different God?
Within modern frameworks of knowledge and representation, Dionysos often appears to be atypical for ancient culture, an exception within the context of ancient polytheism, or even an instance of a difference that anticipates modernism. How can recent research contribute to a more precise understanding of the diverse transformations of the ancient god, from Greek antiquity to the Roman Empire? In this volume, which is the result of an international conference held in March 2009 at the Pergamon Museum Berlin, scholars from all branches of classical studies, including history of scholarship, consider this question. Consequently, this leads to a new look on vase paintings, sanctuaries, rituals and religious-political institutions like theatre, and includes new readings of the texts of ancient poets, historians and philosophers, as well as of papyri and inscriptions. The Sacred and the Feminine in Ancient Greece
In classical Greece women were almost entirely excluded from public life. Yet the feminine was accorded a central place in religious thought and ritual.This volume explores the often paradoxical centrality of the feminine in Greek culture, showing how out of sight was not out of mind. The contributors adopt perspectives from a wide range of disciplines, such as archaeology, art history, psychology and anthropology, in order to investigate various aspects of religion and cult. They include the part played by women in death ritual, the role of heroines, and the fact that goddesses had no childhood, at the same time posing questions about how we know what rituals meant to their participants. The Sacred and the Feminine in Ancient Greece is a lively and colourful exploration of the ways in which religion and ritual reveal women's importance in the Greek polis, showing how ideologies about female roles and behaviour were both endorsed and challenged in the realm of the sacred.

This volume publishes a further seven papers from the Copenhagen Polis Centre, five of which are written by Morgens Herman Hanson. The specialised papers make full use of inscriptions and other written sources to make comparative analyses of the nature of poleis, their citizens and their ethnicity. Subjects include: poleis as consumption cities; the concept of patris in sources; geographically grouped ethnics in the Athenian tribute lists; the evidence for two poleis called Sane; the names of Greek citizens; whether every polis state was centred on a polis town; the Perioikic poleis of Lakedaimon.
