This book is an extensive treatise on the most up-to-date advances in computer graphics technology and its applications. Both in business and industrial areas as well as in research and development, you will see in this book an incredible devel opment of new methods and tools for computer graphics. They play essential roles in enhancing the productivity and quality of human work through computer graph ics and applications. Extensive coverage of the diverse world of computer graphics is the privilege of this book, which is the Proceedings of InterGraphics '83. This was a truly interna tional computer graphics conference and exhibit, held in Tokyo, April 11-14, 1983, sponsored by the World Com...
In the liver, nutrients taken up from food are utilized for the synthesis of different components of the body, and the waste matter and harmful substances produced are disposed or detoxicated. These functions of the liver must be regulated in accordance with the state of the body. The nervous system plays this regulatory role, one which is reminiscent of the production management system in a factory.
Considerable progress in our understanding of tumor promotion has been made by cancer researchers throughout the world. In addition, scientists in several other disciplines have made significant contributions in elucidating the pleiotropic effects of tumor promotion. This international symposium was specifically convened to review research progress in these areas and to consider the relevance of these findings to human cancer causation and prevention. The proceedings include the contributions of leading researchers from Europe, Japan and the USA. Several papers report the exciting progress made in understanding how tumor promoters act at the cellular and biochemical levels. Elsewhere attention is focused on tumor promotion as an important phase in the occurrence of certain human tumors. It is hoped that advances in the understanding of the mechanism of tumor promotion in experimental systems will lead to new and effective approaches to human cancer prevention. The proceedings will be of interest and value to researchers working in cancer research, biochemistry, molecular genetics, mutagenesis and cell biology.
Since the 1950s the prevalence of the so-called 'diseases of civilisation¿¿cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, autism, and so on¿has continued to skyrocket in Western countries. Today, as the same story is beginning to be repeated in newly industrialised nations, modern diseases are reaching pandemic proportions. Why has this happened? The medical profession¿s spin is that the culprit is the aging of the population. But, as Cry for Health (Vol 1) reveals, there is overwhelming evidence for why our populations are ailing, evidence health authorities and governments have chosen to ignore, or have refused to acknowledge, or have kept hidden from the public to keep ...
The first edition of this book, Chemical Warfare Agents: Toxicity at Low Levels, was published just prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Reflecting a greater sense of urgency within the field of chemical defense since this event, research related to chemical warfare agents (CWAs) continues to expand at a remarkable pace.
First published in 1943, VITAMINS AND HORMONES is the longest-running serial published by Academic Press. In the early days of the Serial, the subjects of vitamins and hormones were quite distinct. The Editorial Board now reflects expertise in the field of hormone action, vitamin action, X-ray crystal structure, physiology, and enzyme mechanisms. Under the capable and qualified editorial leadership of Dr. Gerald Litwack, VITAMINS AND HORMONES continues to publish cutting-edge reviews of interest to endocrinologists, biochemists, nutritionists, pharmacologists, cell biologists, and molecular biologists. Others interested in the structure and function of biologically active molecules like hormones and vitamins will, as always, turn to this series for comprehensive reviews by leading contributors to this and related disciplines.
Sympathetic afferent fibers originate from a visceral organ, course in the thoracolumbar rami communicantes, have cell bodies located in dorsal root ganglia, and terminate in the gray matter of the spinal cord. Sympathetic afferent fibers from the heart transmit information about noxious stimuli associated with myocardial ischemia, i. e. angina pectoris. Previous reviews have described the characteristics of cardiovascular sympathetic afferent fibers (Bishop et al. 1983; Malliani 1982). This review summarizes that work and focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying the complexities of angina pectoris. In order to understand anginal pain, cells forming the classical pain pathway, the spinoth...
In addition to its practical value for identification purposes, this collection provides a most interesting historical insight into the work of those astronomers who, over two centuries, revealed their true affinities in a rich and colourful variety of ingenious names - from heavenly goddesses to more prosaic constructions. This third, revised and enlarged edition contains the naming citations for over 95% of the named planets and thus provides a comprehensive data compilation for both astronomers and science historians.
