Chinese Fiction of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries
It has often been said that the nineteenth century was a relatively stagnant period for Chinese fiction, but preeminent scholar Patrick Hanan shows that the opposite is true: the finest novels of the nineteenth century show a constant experimentation and evolution. In this collection of detailed and insightful essays, Hanan examines Chinese fiction before and during the period in which Chinese writers first came into contact with western fiction. Hanan explores the uses made of fiction by westerners in China; the adaptation and integration of western methods in Chinese fiction; and the continued vitality of the Chinese fictional tradition. Some western missionaries, for example, wrote religious novels in Chinese, almost always with the aid of native assistants who tended to change aspects of the work to "fit" Chinese taste. Later, such works as Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle," Jonathan Swift's "A Voyage to Lilliput," the novels of Jules Verne, and French detective stories were translated into Chinese. These interventions and their effects are explored here for virtually the first time.
Mean Field Games
This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2020 AMS Short Course “Mean Field Games: Agent Based Models to Nash Equilibria,” held January 13–14, 2020, in Denver, Colorado. Mean field game theory offers a robust methodology for studying large systems of interacting rational agents. It has been extraordinarily successful and has continued to develop since its inception. The six chapters that make up this volume provide an overview of the subject, from the foundations of the theory to applications in economics and finance, including computational aspects. The reader will find a pedagogical introduction to the main ingredients, from the forward-backward mean field game system to the master equation. Also included are two detailed chapters on the connection between finite games and mean field games, with a pedestrian description of the different methods available to solve the convergence problem. The volume concludes with two contributions on applications of mean field games and on existing numerical methods, with an opening to machine learning techniques.
Gone Feral
Gone Feral: Unruly Women and the Undoing of Normative Femininity is an edited collection that probes the concept of ferality as it relates to and intersects with traditional, patriarchal dictates of normative femininity. The collection, appropriately, is a creative hodge-podge of feral representations and enactments that span multiple disciplines and social and existential dimensions and utilizes textual and intertextual analysis, creative non-fiction, feminist theory, critical animal studies, literature, media analysis, poetry, and artwork to explore the complex and contradictory nature of ferality as it exists within, outside, and on the margins of patriarchal culture. Ultimately, the collection seeks to understand and showcase how the concept of ferality may be understood as an inevitable consequence of, and potential resistance to, patriarchal culture and the dictates of normative femininity that have long snared feminine potential, caged feminine spirits, and neutered feminine authenticity.
China's Leaders

Drawing upon a wealth of both quantitative and qualitative data on the so-called fourth generation of leaders_those who were young during the Cultural Revolution_Cheng Li shows that this group is more diversified than previous generations in formative experiences, political solidarity, ideological conviction, and occupational background. The author explores the contradictions between these emerging leaders and their non-elite peers who were barred from education during the Mao era and now often are unemployed and disenchanted. The book concludes with the intriguing notion that this generation of leaders may have a better understanding of its peersO concerns and therefore may make the regime more accountable to its people, thus contributing to, rather than opposing, democratic development.
