Miloš Štědroň je osobností vskutku renesanční. Je skladatelem, muzikologem, vysokoškolským profesorem, literátem, divadelníkem, karatistou... A také neobyčejným vypravěčem. Střípky této vzpomínkové koláže se formují v originální obraz rodinné historie, hudby a divadla. Někdy budete mít dojem, že čtete pikareskní román, jindy thriller. Čeká vás setkání s Leošem Janáčkem, Milanem Kunderou a „brněnskými bohémy“. Součástí knihy jsou Štědroňovy svébytné literární texty, které vás překvapí svou originální komikou.
Catherine Horel has undertaken a comparative analysis of the societal, ethnic, and cultural diversity in the last decades of the Habsburg Monarchy as represented in twelve cities: Arad, Bratislava, Brno, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Oradea, Rijeka, Sarajevo, Subotica, Timișoara, Trieste, and Zagreb. By purposely selecting these cities, the author aims to counter the disproportionate attention that the largest cities in the empire receive. With a focus on the aspects of everyday life faced by the city inhabitants (associations, schools, economy, and municipal politics) the book avoids any idealization of the monarchy as a paradise of peaceful multiculturalism, and also avoids exaggerating conflicts. The author claims that the world of the Habsburg cities was a dynamic space where many models coexisted and created vitality, emulation, and conflict. Modernization brought about the dissolution of old structures, but also mobility, the progress of education, the explosion of associative life, and constantly growing cultural offerings.
Muzikologům a pracovníkům hudebních fondů a archivů slouží bohatý seznam odborné literatury.
"[Book title] is of interest to those concerned with East European and Bulgarian history. But it also has a broader appeal, for instance to students of the Soviet conquest of Eastern Europe and the beginnings of the political component of the Cold War, and to those concerned with such general questions as loyalty to political principle as opposed to loyalty to political party, especially during a time of economic stress such as the early 1930's. Finally, it recounts the dramatic story of an opposition leader in a country which dealt very brutally with such people, and of an extraordinary man willing to risk his substance and even his life for the political ideals in which he believed."--Book jacket.
