Thomas Burke was born Sydney Thomas Burke on November 29th, 1886 in Eltham, London (at the time it was part of Kent). An author in the early years of the century who brought his skills of pen and eye to parts of London, specifically the Limehouse district of the East End and wrote with drive and vigour about the characters he met and the places that he knew. Whether he turned that material into fiction or non-fiction he words seep quality. His work ranged from these wonderful vignettes of down at heel London to writings on homosexuality and the English Countryside. Thomas Burke died in the Homeopathic Hospital in Queens Square, Bloomsbury on 22 September 1945. Now sadly neglected we hope that the reprinting of his earlier works might once again give him the prominence and respect his talents deserve.

Thomas Burke's writing blends several styles to create a dramatic portrait of London. Limehouse Nights and its various sequels classified Burke as a "purveyor of melodramatic stories of lust and murder among London's lower classes". Both his essays and fiction, focusing particularly on Limehouse Nights, are characterised, seemingly paradoxically, with harsh realities and more romanticised, poetic outlooks. This selection chosen by the critic August Nemocontains the following stories: - The Chink and the Child - The Father of Yoto - Gracie Goodnight - The Paw - The Cue - Beryl, the Croucher and the Rest of England - The Sign of the Lamp

London in My Time by Thomas Burke begins with a great party celebrating the queen in England. Burke reflects on various people, shops, war, and entertainment in England. Excerpt: "Diamond Jubilee. . . . Sixty Years a Queen. . . . The Longest Reign. . . . The roofs and windows of London are rippling with red-white-and-blue; even the poorest dwelling shows its three-hap'ny flag. Every street-organ is playing and every boy whistling, Leslie Stuart's Soldiers of the Queen."
