Analytically Oriented Thomism
As the title suggests, this collection of twelve essays – by an international team of researchers – is the result of intersecting two areas of philosophical investigation which are often thought to be widely apart: Analytic Philosophy and the doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas. The authors breathe new life into old ideas by examining Thomasic theses and arguments by applying the tools and techniques of Analytic Philosophy. The volume begins with an introductory essay: “What Is Analytically Oriented Thomism?” The other essays divide into four broad categories: (1) The Thomistic Doctrine of God (essays 2-4); (2) Thomistic Metaphysics: Logical Reconstruction (essay 5); (3) Thomistic Metaphysics: Ontology and Epistemology (essays 6-9); (4) Philosophical Theology (essays 10-11). The Essence & Topicality of Thomism
Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P., explains why Thomism is the solution to the present crisis of Modernism in the Church. The problem: The indications of the current crisis in the Church have "been not of a crisis of faith, but of a very grave malady of the intellect, which conducts itself on the tracks of liberal Protestantism and through relativism to absolute skepticism." Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange's solution: Thomism. "Thomism corresponds to the profound needs of the modern world because it restores the love of truth for the sake of truth itself. Bringing Good Even Out of Evil
The question of whether the existence of evil in the world is compatible with the existence of an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-good God has been debated for centuries. Many have addressed classical arguments from evil, and while recent scholarship in analytic philosophy of religion has produced newer formulations of the problem, most of these newer formulations rely on a conception of God that is not held by all theists. In Bringing Good Even Out of Evil: Thomism and the Problem of Evil, B. Kyle Keltz defends classical theism against contemporary problems of evil through the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas and his interpreters. Keltz discusses Aquinas’s thought on God, evil, and what kind of world God would make, then turns to contemporary problems of evil and shows how they miss the mark when it comes to classical theism. From Unity to Pluralism
Through an in-depth study of four key figures- Pierre Rousselot, Joseph Marechal, Jacques Maritain, and Etienne Gilson- From Unity to Pluralism traces the evolution of Thomism in the first half of the twentieth century. Through their work, Thomism encountered contemporary thought and rediscovered its authentic roots, and the ideal of a univocal, unitary doctrine of Scholastic truth embodied in the unambiguous teaching of Thomas Aquinas, which had inspired the Thomist revival at the end of the nineteenth century, gradually gave way. The result is the emergence of pluralism within the system itself and the independent development of the theologies of Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan.
