We Knocked Their Socks Off

KUDOS to We Knocked Their Socks Off, Tim Bosworth’s fine, new biography of the Curtis String Quartet (1927-1981). The first string quartet trained in America, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA. it was arguably the greatest string quartet in history. At its retirement in 1981, the Quartet had been together longer than any other. It was the first American quartet to perform in England and to tour Europe. Twice. It played in big cities where it was well-known, on college campuses, in lobbies of banks, and in small towns where no one had even known what a quartet was. In its prime, the Quartet’s work was recognized as the gold standard for quartet playing. Yet up to now, it has still not received its due. Left standing has been the false narrative that quartets began in America only after World War II. That narrative, sadly, has written the Quartet out of history. This book writes it back in.

From Jeremiad to Jihad

"From Jeremiad to Jihad is an ambitious volume. The selections here introduce new perspectives on the intersection of religious institutions and American culture. Whereas the subject of just war has largely been the provenance of religious and philosophical studies, with some input from international relations and political science, the authors of this volume have brought methods and questions from the study of history to bear on the discussion. Carlson and Ebel have pulled together a significant work that fosters new conversations between scholars interested in just war and American religious history." - John Kelsay, author of Arguing the Just War in Islam “Why is America, one of the worl...

Anyway You Can

"As a doctor the number one question I get from patients when they are faced with a scary choice in medicine today, 'Doc, what would you do?' This is the story of what happened when my 71-year-old mother was dying of cancer. Tim Ferriss saved her life. This story will save yours." In ANYWAY YOU CAN, Dr. Bosworth shares her 'accidental' discovery of ketosis and its wide array of health benefits as she supplemented her mom's chemotherapy with ketones. Her story of courage, faith, and tenacity helps young and old achieve better physical, mental, and emotional health through ketosis. Dr. Bosworth inspires patients to become stewards of their own health through her leadership skills, public speaking and 'sticky teachable moments.' When patients ask how to turn around their chronic health problem, she answers "Fight it ANYWAY YOU CAN. Ketones for Life."

What We Owe to Each Other

“This magnificent book...opens up a novel, arresting position on matters that have been debated for thousands of years.” —Times Literary Supplement How do we judge whether an action is morally right or wrong? If an action is wrong, what reason does that give us not to do it? Why should we give such reasons priority over our other concerns and values? In this book, T. M. Scanlon offers new answers to these questions, as they apply to the central part of morality that concerns what we owe to each other. According to his contractualist view, thinking about right and wrong is thinking about what we do in terms that could be justified to others and that they could not reasonably reject. He ...

The Military-Entertainment Complex

With the rise of drones and computer-controlled weapons, the line between war and video games continues to blur. In this book, the authors trace how the realities of war are deeply inflected by their representation in popular entertainment. War games and other media, in turn, feature an increasing number of weapons, tactics, and threat scenarios from the War on Terror. While past analyses have emphasized top-down circulation of pro-military ideologies through government public relations efforts and a cooperative media industry, The Military-Entertainment Complex argues for a nonlinear relationship, defined largely by market and institutional pressures. Tim Lenoir and Luke Caldwell explore th...

Patient Treatment Adherence

This new book summarizes the adherence literature for a number of specific health behaviors and populations. It provides a comprehensive source on the conceptualization, interventions, and measurement of treatment adherence and a synthesis of the research across demographic and chronic diseases. The text presents problems associated with treatment adherence; theoretical models that have commonly been used to understand, predict, and/or improve adherence; adherence with specific behaviors including exercise, diet, rehabilitation, medication, and psychological therapies; and strategies in enhancing adherence. Because chronic diseases involve similar behaviors, the handbook is organized by spec...
