Private Supplementary Tutoring Expenditures and Children's Learning Outcomes
Many households in developing countries seek to address poor learning outcomes by investing in private supplementary tutoring (PST). We examined the effects of PST expenditures on learning outcomes and possible heterogeneous effects related to the child's gender and locality. We use instrumental variable, propensity score matching, and the Lewbel procedures, and a sample of 2,095 households from the 7th Ghana Living Standard Survey. We establish that when families invested in PST at the basic school level, their children's ability to read, write, and do written calculations improved significantly. PST expenditures benefitted boys and children residing in rural areas more than girls and those living in urban areas. PST may be useful for improving learning outcomes, especially for children struggling academically, but any policy integration should be done tactfully to avoid exacerbating existing economically-induced educational inequalities.
Health-Risk Behaviors and BMI Percentiles
This study examined the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) percentile and health risk behaviors of physical activity, dietary behaviors and sleep among high school students from the Youth Risk Behavioral Survey. The study used the 2013 National Youth Risk Behavioral Survey data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The researcher used data for 9th to 12th graders to examine the associations between physical activity, dietary behavior, sleep and BMI percentiles among those participants using a measure of Spearman’s Rho correlation and Multiple Linear Regression analysis. Protection, Patronage, or Plunder? British Machinations and (B)uganda’s Struggle for Independence
In the scramble for Africa, Britain took a lion’s share of the continent. It occupied and controlled vast territories, including the Uganda Protectorate – which it ruled for 68 years. Early administrators in the region encountered the progressive kingdom of Buganda, which they incorporated into the British Empire. Under the guise of protection, indirect rule and patronage, Britain overran, plundered and disempowered the kingdom’s traditional institutions. On liquidation of the Empire, Buganda was coaxed into a problematic political order largely dictated from London. Today, 56 years after independence, the kingdom struggles to rediscover itself within Uganda’s fragile politics. Based on newly de-classified records, this book reconstructs a history of the machinations underpinning British imperial interests in (B)Uganda and the personalities who embodied colonial rule. It addresses Anglo-Uganda relations, demonstrating how Uganda’s politics reflects its colonial past, and the forces shaping its future. It is a far-reaching examination of British rule in (B)uganda, questioning whether it was designed for protection, for patronage or for plunder.
