The population of African immigrants in the United States has grown rapidly over the past few decades. African Immigrants and the American Experience: Race, Anti-Black Violence, and the Quest for the American Dream by Wanjala S. Nasong’o, Imali J. Abala, and Kefa M. Otiso explores contemporary sub-Saharan African immigrants’ experiences with issues of race, ethnicity, and systemic violence in the United States. Each contributor within this volume dissects how these issues have impacted, and in many cases snuffed out, the immigrants’ quest for the fabled American dream. Divided into three sections, each chapter focuses on these main themes: race and anti-black violence, educational attainment among African immigrants in pursuit of the American dream, and African immigrant’s socioeconomics, health, and well-being. Through research and first-hand accounts, the contributors provide perspectives of what it truly means to be a sub-Saharan African immigrant in the United States.
Many households in developing countries seek to address poor learning outcomes by investing in private supplementary tutoring (PST). We examined the effects of PST expenditures on learning outcomes and possible heterogeneous effects related to the child's gender and locality. We use instrumental variable, propensity score matching, and the Lewbel procedures, and a sample of 2,095 households from the 7th Ghana Living Standard Survey. We establish that when families invested in PST at the basic school level, their children's ability to read, write, and do written calculations improved significantly. PST expenditures benefitted boys and children residing in rural areas more than girls and those living in urban areas. PST may be useful for improving learning outcomes, especially for children struggling academically, but any policy integration should be done tactfully to avoid exacerbating existing economically-induced educational inequalities.
The potential of agricultural soil carbon sequestration in reducing greenhouse gases and mitigating the impacts of climate change is widely recognized. However, there is limited knowledge of farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments to switch to carbon-sequestering conservation practices. This study investigates how farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments differ based on their current adoption behavior toward conservation practices. The data for the analysis were collected through a mail-in survey of row crop producers in South Dakota, conducted from December 2021 to February 2022. The study employed a discrete choice experiment and random parameter logit model to estimate farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments. Our study shows that farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments vary based on their adoption status of conservation practices and practice type. The findings suggest that carbon market providers and policymakers should consider developing targeted programs and policies that consider differences in farmers' preferences toward carbon payments based on their current adoption status.

This new textbook provides an accessible introduction to sustainable aquaculture through its relationship with three key pillars: the environment, the economy, and society. As the demand for seafood keeps increasing, aquaculture is considered one of the most promising and sustainable ways to satisfy this demand with nutritious and high-quality food. It is important to understand, therefore, the wider role and impact aquaculture has on the environment, the economy, and society. The book begins by providing a foundational introduction to aquaculture and sustainability, discussing the complex and interdependent relationship that exists between the two. The core text of the book is divided into ...
Heat Alert and Response Systems (HARS) are currently undergoing testing and implementation in Canada. These programs seek to reduce the adverse health effects of heat waves on human health by issuing weather forecasts and warnings, informing individuals about possible protections from excessive heat, and providing such protections to vulnerable subpopulations and individuals at risk. For these programs to be designed effectively, it is important to know how individuals perceive the heat, what their experience with heat-related illness is, how they protect themselves from excessive heat, and how they acquire information about such protections. In September 2010, we conducted a survey of house...
