This book narrates the uniquely intertwined life and scientific career of Nobel laureate Osamu Shimomura, with particular attention to his discovery of aequorin and Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). It includes his early memories of Manchuria and wartime Japan featuring an eyewitness account of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, his postwar studies and his travels to collect and research more than fifteen bioluminescent species, in locations ranging from Japan to San Juan Island, Bermuda, New Zealand and Norway. Dr Shimomura describes the unique combination of serendipity and perseverance that led ultimately to his 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Human Interface and the Management of Information. Visual Information and Knowledge Management
This two-volume set LNCS 11569 and 11570 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Thematic Area on Human Interface and the Management of Information, HIMI 2019, held as part of HCI International 2019 in Orlando, FL, USA. HCII 2019 received a total of 5029 submissions, of which 1275 papers and 209 posters were accepted for publication after a careful reviewing process. The 91 papers presented in the two volumes were organized in topical sections named: Visual information; Data visualization and analytics; Information, cognition and learning; Information, empathy and persuasion; Knowledge management and sharing; Haptic and tactile interaction; Information in virtual and augmented reality; Machine learning and intelligent systems; Human motion and expression recognition and tracking; Medicine, healthcare and quality of life applications.
UN collaboration on social protection
The objective of this paper is to work towards a consensus among UN agencies on how to best support countries to achieve progress towards universal social protection in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To this end the paper investigates 1) lessons learnt from past joint UN work on social protection 2) priority areas for social protection engagement 3) recommendations for improving UN collaboration and 4) next steps for the way forward.
