Development and Recognition of the Transformed Cell

The study of the phenotypic and genetic features that characterize the malignant cell is a rapidly growing and changing field. Clearly new insights into the processes involved in normal and abnormal cell growth will facilitate our understanding of events relevant to cancer and cellular differentiation. Early studies on genetic fea tures associated with cancer focused on chromosomal abnormalities that were observable in several human malignancies. The more recent examination of onco genes and the proteins they encode has helped pinpoint many steps in different processes that might be involved in cancer. Immunologic studies of cancer have also developed from an imprecise series of investigations to a more detailed molecular examination of cell-surface struc tures that can be recognized immunologically. In the course of the development of modern tumor immunology, it has become clear that many of the antigens that can be recognized appear to be the products of genes involved in cell growth. Fur thermore, changes in the cell surface of malignant cells have often been found to include alteration of nonprotein constituents.

B and T Cell Tumors documents the proceedings of the 1982 International Conference on ""B and T Cell Tumors: Biological and Clinical Aspects"" held in Squaw Valley, California. The meeting was one of the conferences of the 1982 UCLA Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology series. This book is organized into six parts encompassing 79 chapters. Considerable chapters tackle the origin and classification of tumors; normal clones of T and B cells; differentiation of T and B cell tumors; regulation of tumor growth and tumor therapy. Each topic is discussed based on the results obtained in human and animal models in the laboratory. Other chapters explore lymphoid neoplasms and the enormous progr...

The Interleukins

Investigations of the activation, proliferation, and, in some cases, differentia tion of mononuclear cells involved in the immune response are proceeding rapidly. These studies have resulted in the discovery of several factors that promote these cellular events, some of which have been characterized biochemically to various extents. Because of the considerable interest in understanding these cellular changes at the molecular level, we chose to produce the first thematic volume for Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology; the theme deals with certain regulatory factors that promote proliferation and differentiation. We have com piled contributions from numerous scientists well known for t...

Humoral Factors in Host Defense contains the proceedings of the First Takeda Science Foundation Symposium on Bioscience, held on October 28-30, 1982, in Kyoto, Japan. The symposium focused on the humoral factors regulating immune responses, with emphasis on T cell-derived immunoregulatory molecules; molecular mechanisms of interferons; factors involved in differentiation and activation of immunocytes; and the use of the molecular genetics approach to host defense factors. Organized into four parts encompassing 22 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of interleukin-2 and T cell-replacing factors, along with their immunological functions and biochemical features. It then discusses antigen-specific T cell factors; immunoregulatory molecules from human monoclonal T cells; physiological and pathological roles of lymphokines; regulation of the immune system by monoclonal T cell peptides; production of a glycosylated human protein by recombinant DNA technology; and molecular genetics of immunoglobulin genes and the major histocompatibility antigen. Geneticists and biologists will find this book extremely useful.
