Marja’s vader wordt krijgsgevangen gemaakt en de rest van het gezin moet naar een kamp. Honger, dorst en ziekte eisen hun tol. Als Peter naar een ander kamp moet, moet Marja opeens de oudste zijn. Kan ze dat wel? Met veel fantasie en vindingrijkheid probeert ze de moed erin te houden. Lieke van Duin en Truus Huizenga baseerden dit verhaal op de jeugdherinneringen van Truus, die van haar negende tot bijna haar twaalfde jaar in drie jappenkampen leefde.
