Literatures in African Languages

Although African literatures in English and French are widely known outside Africa, those in the African languages themselves have not received comparable attention. In this book a number have been selected for survey by fourteen specialist writers, providing the reader with an introduction to this very wide field and a body of reference material which includes extensive bibliographies and biographical information on African authors. Theoretical issues such as genre divisions are discussed in the essays and the historical, social and political forces at work in the creation and reception of African literature are examined. Literature is treated as an art whose medium is language, so that both the oral and written forms are encompassed. This book will be of value not only to readers concerned with the cultures of Africa but to all those with an interest in the literary phenomena of the world in general.

The book identifies and critically analyses Hausa contemporary films known as Kannywood. The focus is on video films with particular emphasis on sources in oral literature. How traditional theatres are re-enacted and re-framed during filmmaking, and how far are traditional traits captured, changed, or enriched in video film are some issues the book negotiates on. The harmony between orature and technology, as generated by means of the transported film medium is expressed in the book. The new medium is integrated into the ongoing traditional and cultural surroundings, where native narrative traditions have been adopted into the global film medium, which is in alignment with contemporary medial culture. Yusuf Baba Gar is the lecturer for Hausa at the Department of African Studies, Humboldt University, Berlin.

Madeleine McCann was nearly four years old when she disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in Portugal on May 3, 2007. Despite a massive joint investigation by the Portuguese and British police departments, Madeleine was not found. Reports of sightings of the young girl in Spain, the Netherlands, Morocco, Argentina, Austria, France, India, America, and Australia brought cruel moments of hope to her family, but her actual location and fate remained a mystery. As the search for Madeleine reached a dead end in Europe, Salisu Suleiman, thousands of miles away in Africa, had developed an unusual approach that could overcome the limitations of modern investigative techniques and forensic ...

ONE HUNDRED years past and gone, just like yesterday, and Nigeria is still in transition. Created on the vagaries of British imperialism, Lord Frederick Lugard, on January 1, 1914, unilaterally stitched together, two diametrically opposed Northern and Southern parts of the Niger bend to form an entity he called NIGERIA. Since then, Nigeria has remained changeless but with severe internal contradictions that threaten the shaky foundation on which it was formed. By the amalgamation of 1914, Nigeria marks her centenary in 2014 – a century that reverberates 46 years of colonial domination, which set the agenda for political instability and internal conflicts; 29 wasted years of incessant blood...
