Ethnicity, Identity, and the Development of Nationalism in Iran investigates the ways in which Armenian minorities in Iran encountered Iranian nationalism and participated in its development over the course of the twentieth century. Based primarily on oral interviews, archival documents, memoirs, memorabilia, and photographs, the book examines the lives of a group of Armenian Iranians—a truck driver, an army officer, a parliamentary representative, a civil servant, and a scout leader—and explores the personal conflicts and paradoxes attendant upon their layered allegiances and compound identities. In documenting individual experiences in Iranian industry, military, government, education, and community organizations, the five social biographies detail the various roles of elites and nonelites in the development of Iranian nationalism and reveal the multiple forces that shape the processes of identity formation. Yaghoubian combines these portraits with a theoretical grounding to answer recurring pivotal questions about how nationalism evolves, why it is appealing, what broad forces and daily activities shape and sustain it, and the role of ethnicity in its development.
Yukaghir Texts
The book presents authentic texts in two Yukaghir languages, Tundra and Kolyma Yukaghir, an isolate group of languages spoken by few small communities in Siberia. The major goal of the book is to make primary Yukaghir data accessible for readers who have no previous knowledge of these languages. Each text is provided with a detailed morph-to-morph translation following thecurrent linguistic standards, as well as with idiomatic English translation. In addition, the book contains Yukaghir-English vocabularies for both Yukaghir languages, with cross-references to all text occurrences of each word, a set of comprehensive morphemic and grammatical indices to text corpora, and abrief overview of basic ethnographic and grammatical facts. The principles of text representation are described in a user's guide. The book will serve as a useful source of data for scholars of the Yukaghir languages and cultures, as well as for anyone interested in cross-linguistic or cross-cultural studies.
Salafismus
Der gewaltbereite Salafismus wird seit ca. 20 Jahren breit diskutiert. Dabei werden jedoch Fragen nach den Ursachen, der sozialen Verantwortung und den biografischen Hintergründen zu wenig beachtet. Umso wichtiger ist es deshalb, dass die Prävention und speziell die Soziale Arbeit eine zentrale Rolle übernehmen. Prävention zielt u.a. auf die Stärkung der Persönlichkeit, die Schaffung von Konfliktfähigkeit, gewaltfreie Kommunikation und Vermeidung von Straftaten. Das Buch nimmt entsprechend einerseits die Motive und die gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen des radikalen und gewaltbereiten Salafismus in den Blick. Andererseits stellt es Programme, Ansätze und Konzepte vor, die den Akteurinnen und Akteuren in der Sozialen Arbeit mehr Sicherheit im Umgang mit der Zielgruppe geben.
Combinatory Linguistics
The book examines to what extent the mediating relation between constituents and their semantics can arise from combinatory knowledge of words. It traces the roots of Combinatory Categorial Grammar, and uses the theory to promote a Humean question in linguistics and cognitive science: Why do we see limited constituency and dependency in natural languages, despite their diversity and potential infinity? A potential answer is that constituents and dependencies might have arisen from a single resource: adjacency. The combinatory formulation of adjacency constrains possible grammars.
