Planning non existent dictionaries

There is an increasing number of dictionary types and lexical search-tools designed to respond to an ever-growing array of user needs. The quest for innovation, however, is not over and this is what this book shall shed light on. In the autumn of 2013, a conference entitled Planning non-existent dictionaries was held at the University of Lisbon. Scholars and lexicographers were invited to present and submit for discussion their research and practices, focusing on aspects that are traditionally perceived as shortcomings by dictionary makers and dictionary users. The topics for debate were intended to be provocative: the identification of dictionary types that have never been developed for cer...

Manual de linguística portuguesa

This Manual provides a general yet detailed account of the current research in Portuguese linguistics by combining overview chapters and in-depth analyses of selected topics. It integrates diachronic and synchronic, standard and dialectal, adult grammar and L1 acquisition data and offers comprehensive information on specific features of Portuguese, using the methods and insights of present-day linguistic research. The overview chapters feature linguistic fields that significantly developed over the past decades in the context of research on Portuguese (e.g. language contact, prosody, the computational lexicon, forensic phonetics). The chapters covering particular topics in syntax, semantics ...

Language Acquisition Across Linguistic and Cognitive Systems

Language Acquisition Across Linguistic and Cognitive Systems

How and why do all children learn language? Why do some have difficulties while others are early language learners? What are the consequences of early bilingualism? Is it possible to reach native-like competence in a foreign language? Although we still cannot fully answer these questions, research during the last two decades has begun to solve some pieces of the puzzle. This book proposes an interdisciplinary collection of writings from some of the best specialists across several fields in cognitive science, offering a wide sample of recent advances in the study of first language acquisition, bilingualism, second language acquisition, and disorders of oral language. It is addressed to all researchers and students interested in language acquisition, as well as to teachers, clinicians and parents, who will find therein many new findings and varied methodological approaches, as well as challenging questions that are still debated and in need of further research.

The Landscape of Lexicography

The Landscape of Lexicography

This book consists of a series of papers that look at three different aspects of the landscape as seen in dictionaries from across Europe. Multilingual diachronic case studies into lexicographical descriptions of flora, landscape features and colours concentrate on three supposedly simple words: daisies (Bellis perenis L.), hills and the colour red. The work is part of the ongoing LandLex initiative, originally developed as part of the COST ENeL - European Network for e-Lexicography - action. The group brings together researchers in lexicography and lexicology from across Europe and is dedicated to studying multilingual and diachronic issues in language. It aims to valorise the wealth of European language diversity as found in dictionaries by developing and testing new digital annotation tools and a historical morphological dictionary prototype.

The present study aims at offering an overview of Spanish-Portuguese (and Spanish-Galician-Portuguese) language contact, both in Europe and in America. It pays a special attention to the history of linguistic interferences in each region, examining how and when lexical borrowings entered the Spanish language and how they disseminated across the Spanish-speaking world.

Introducao ao Portugues Juridico

Introducao ao Portugues Juridico

Publikace seznamuje čtenáře s problematikou právnické portugalštiny a jejími specifiky. This publication introduces the main issues and specifics of legal Portuguese. The instruction of Portuguese generally focuses on standard or spoken language, while presenting technical and professional language only tangentially. The fact that this textbook concentrates on legal Portuguese makes it particularly relevant as it reflects the current needs arising from the ever increasing integration of the Czech Republic into the EU.
