Vitamin D in 2020
Many things have been said and written on the skeletal and non-skeletal effects of vitamin D, but the largest recent interventional studies are generally negative. How should we thus position ourselves in 2020? Should we say “stop” or “not yet”? Indeed, the aging of the population, as well as new challenges and discoveries, is still triggering interest in this old molecule. In this Special Edition of Nutrients, we invited top experts to give their opinion on this important debate. We also encouraged scientists to submit their latest research on nutritional requirements in the general population and in high-risk groups, as well as treatment strategies, epidemiology, analytical updates and new devices for vitamin D measurement and the effect of vitamin D on bone and extra-skeletal health. As readers will see, this Special Issue reinforces the high prevalence of vitamin deficiency and insufficiency in the general population and supports the safety of this low-cost molecule, revealing new perspectives regarding the extra-skeletal effects of vitamin D.
Salt in the Earth
Salt is a predominant compound for humankind and the earth preserves an important source of this element of life. This book reviews this multi-disciplinary issue in which geoscientists, historians, agriculturalists, medical doctors, and general scientists have been interested in its nature. The authors have provided contributions on the origin and history of salt, intrusion with freshwater effect, its usability as a material, and its role in life. The safety of groundwater resources should be a priority for humanity. Contribution on this important topic is provided by geophysical investigations to characterize saltwater intrusions in aquifers. Neenakosti v zdravju
Poročilo, ki je pred vami, je odličen prikaz medsektorskega sodelovanja med ključnimi raziskovalnimi institucijami in ministrstvi, ki s svojim delom in politikami aktivno naslavljajo zmanjševanje neenakosti. Opravljeno delo je tudi plod uspešnega sodelovanja Slovenije s Svetovno zdravstveno organizacijo na tem področju. V letu 2019 je Slovenija gostila v svetovnem merilu prvo konferenco Svetovne zdravstvene organizacije o neenakostih v zdravju na visoki ravni. Na podlagi zaključkov konference je nastala Ljubljanska izjava, ki poziva politiko k odločnejšemu ukrepanju in je pomemben mejnik v prizadevanjih za odpravo neenakosti v zdravju. Slovenija tudi sicer sodi med tistih nekaj držav, ki so se problema neenakosti v zdravju lotile aktivno. O tem nenazadnje pričajo tudi do sedaj objavljena poročila in druge publikacije.
