Examines the response of the Lutheran Church in Germany to Nazi persecution of the Jews. Traces the history of antisemitism and of opposition to it in Germany, with emphasis on the Weimar period. Analyzes Hans Meiser's series of articles on "Die evangelische Gemeinde und die Judenfrage" (1926) as representative of the attitudes of many churchmen. Meiser, later bishop of Bavaria, rejected "race materialism" but demanded that the German people be protected from the dangerous and "corrupt" influence of the Jews and called for separation of the two peoples. Such attitudes predisposed churchmen to assent to Nazi racist policy even when they protested against its excesses. Describes the failure of the governing bodies of the Church to raise their voices against the anti-Jewish terror of early 1933; the debate over the "Aryan paragraph"; the protests of individuals, especially Dietrich Bonhoeffer; and the efforts of a few church workers, in particular Charlotte Friedenthal and Marga Meusel, to organize assistance to non-Aryan Christians.
