The Oxford Gothic Grammar
This volume provides a comprehensive reference grammar of Gothic, the earliest attested language of the Germanic family (apart from runic inscriptions). It is the first in English to draw on the recently discovered Bologna fragment and Crimean graffiti, in addition to the traditional Bible translation explored in most works to date.
Studies in Functional Stylistics
The 15 contributions in the present collection can be divided roughly into three groups: (1) Papers directly following up functional stylistics and the theory of language culture, elaborated in the classical period of the Prague Linguistic School. (2) Papers concerning the problems of style in a wider communicative arena. These contributions are closely related to contemporary text linguistics and also deal with problems involving psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and semiotics. (3) Papers having, at least in some part, a pronounced historiographic character. These contributions reflect the fact that contemporary Czech linguistic research is firmly anchored in the Prague linguistic tradition. Although the authors' frame of reference is mainly Czech and the current language situation in the Czech Republic, the majority of contributions were intended to have a more general linguistic character and general linguistic validity.

Publikace vypráví o historii Katedry anglistiky a amerikanistiky FF MU. Vyprávění je strukturované a je založeno na metodě orální historie. Vypravěčem je Don Sparling, osobnost dlouhodobě spjatá s životem katedry a její bývalý vedoucí. První kapitola líčí vznik Anglického semináře v roce 1920 pod vedením profesora Františka Chudoby a pokračuje popisem meziválečných událostí. Další kapitoly se věnují poválečnému období až do roku 1977 (příchod Dona Sparlinga na katedru), následně osmdesátým létům a době porevoluční do roku 2000. Poslední kapitola shrnuje dějiny významné součásti života katedry, divadelního spolku The Gypsywood Players.

The Reception of Charles Dickens in Europe offers a full historical survey of Dickens's reception in all the major European countries and many of the smaller ones, filling a major gap in Dickens scholarship, which has by and large neglected Dickens's fortunes in Europe, and his impact on major European authors and movements. Essays by leading international critics and translators give full attention to cultural changes and fashions, such as the decline of Dickens's fortunes at the end of the nineteenth century in the period of Naturalism and Aestheticism, and the subsequent upswing in the period of Modernism, in part as a consequence of the rise of film in the era of Chaplin and Eisenstein. It will also offer accounts of Dickens's reception in periods of political upheaval and revolution such as during the communist era in Eastern Europe or under fascism in Germany and Italy in particular.

Das Buch Spielräume der modernen linguistischen Forschung bietet Einblicke in die moderne linguistische Forschung. Die einzelnen Beiträge in dieser Publikation schlagen thematisch einen breiten Bogen von lexikologischen und lexikographischen Arbeiten über grammatische Beiträge bis zu pragmatisch orientierten Studien. Einige Beiträge sind didaktisch bzw. kontrastiv orientiert. Fokussiert werden diverse moderne europäische Sprachen, v. a. Deutsch, Englisch, Tschechisch, Slowakisch und Lettisch.
Arnošt Vilém Kraus (1859–1943)
Der Literaturwissenschaftler, Kulturvermittler und Publizist Arnošt Vilém (Ernst Wilhelm) Kraus beschäftigte sich auf vielfältige Weise mit den sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhängen in den Böhmischen Ländern, die durch die interkulturelle Zusammensetzung ihrer Bevölkerung geprägt waren. Dabei griff Kraus als Skandinavist und Germanist nicht nur auf den deutsch-tschechischen Vergleich zurück, sondern erweiterte seine Perspektive auch um die skandinavische, die ihm aufgrund seiner wissenschaftlichen Ausbildung zugänglich war. Der engagierte Intellektuelle begriff seine Arbeit über die Wissenschaft hinaus immer auch als eine kulturpolitische Aufgabe. Im von Helena Březinová, Steffen Höhne und Václav Petrbok herausgegebenen Sammelband werden erstmals umfassend die fachlichen Interessen und die publizistische Tätigkeit von Kraus in einem breiteren historischen Kontext vorgestellt und mit Beiträgen zu seiner Biographie und seiner kulturvermittelnden Tätigkeit ergänzt.
Germanic and Its Dialects
Germanists have long lamented the lack of comprehensive bibliographies of past and present literature, particularly in the areas of Frisian, Old English, Old High German, and, most notably, Old Saxon. The compilers of this bibliography deem it crucial to fill this lacuna before embarking on two further volumes project to complete this series: I. Texts, and II. Maps and Commentaries. NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER: The publication of the two further volumes (I. Texts; II. Maps and Commentaries) has been canceled.
