The Israeli Institute for Intelligence and Special Services, the Mossad, is pobably the best known of the world's intelligence services, one of the most sespected and, certainly, one of the most intriguing. However, despite its fame, the available literature, other than Hebrew, is limited and scattered amongst a variety of subject areas because the tentacles of the Mossad are similarly varied. The aim of this volume is to document the range of English language material available on «f Mossad from its pre-official origins in Europe during the Second World War to e present period of the Middle East peace process. The organization had its origins in the aftermath of the Holocaust, being the ag...

Two Solicitudes

In March 1995, Victor-Levy Beaulieu, the well-known French-Canadian novelist and man of letters, spent a week in Toronto, staying with Margaret Atwood. That week in Toronto was matched by a return engagement in May 1995, when Margaret Atwood visited Victor-Levy Beaulieu's country home near Trois-Pistoles, Quebec. There, over ten days, they discussed many topics of mutual interest that underlie literature: the importance of childhood, of myth, of belonging to territory, the real versus the imaginary world, power and the lack of it, and their own works.

Context North America

Context North America is a comparative study of Canadian and American literary relations that emphasizes the cultural and institutional contexts in which Canadian literature is taught and read. This volume exemplifies the question of how the literatures of Canada might aptly be studied and contextualized in the days of heightened discontinuity and increasingly ambiguous borderlines both between and within the many narratives that make up North America. Published in English.

Another 100 of the World's Best Houses

Following the success of IMAGES' first 100 of the World's Best Houses book, we searched the globe for another collection of amazing houses. The result of this search is Another 100 of the World's Best Houses . Each house in this new volume has been selected for its unique and extraordinary qualities. The overwhelming theme is the way in which architects use their remarkable skills to relate these masterpieces to their various contexts and landscapes. Locations are as diverse as the houses themselves and include the coast of Peru, inner-city London, rugged Australian coastal sites, urban Sao Paulo, spectacular New Zealand alpine retreats and coastal hideaways, American prairies, frosty Oslo, the gorgeous West Indies, tropical Southeast Asia, suburban Lithuania, Costa Rica, and many other fascinating sites.

Hope Now

In March of 1980, just a month before Sartre's death, Le Nouvel Observateur published a series of interviews, the last ever given, between the blind and debilitated philosopher and his young assistant, Benny Levy. Readers were scandalized and denounced the interviews as distorted, inauthentic, even fraudulent. They seemed to portray a Sartre who had abandoned his leftist convictions and rejected his most intimate friends, including Simone de Beauvoir. This man had cast aside his own fundamental beliefs in the primacy of individual consciousness, the inevitability of violence, and Marxism, embracing instead a messianic Judaism. No, Sartre's supporters argued, it was his interlocutor, the ex-r...

This is the first study of the life and art of Sydney Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin's brother, a person notable not only for his importance in establishing his brother's career, but in several other early Hollywood enterprises, including the founding of United Artists and the Syd Chaplin Aircraft Corporation, America's first domestic airline. Sydney also had a successful film career, beginning in 1914 with Keystone and culminating with a string of popular films for Warner Bros. in the 1920s. Sydney's film career ended in 1929 because of an assault charge by an actress. This incident proved to be only the last in a string of scandals, each causing him to move to another place, another studio, or another business venture.

This is the second volume in a subseries of the Lecture Notes in Mathematics called Lévy Matters, which is published at irregular intervals over the years. Each volume examines a number of key topics in the theory or applications of Lévy processes and pays tribute to the state of the art of this rapidly evolving subject with special emphasis on the non-Brownian world. The expository articles in this second volume cover two important topics in the area of Lévy processes. The first article by Serge Cohen reviews the most important findings on fractional Lévy fields to date in a self-contained piece, offering a theoretical introduction as well as possible applications and simulation techniques. The second article, by Alexey Kuznetsov, Andreas E. Kyprianou, and Victor Rivero, presents an up to date account of the theory and application of scale functions for spectrally negative Lévy processes, including an extensive numerical overview.
