Since the arrival of the "Gypsies," or Romanies, in Europe at the beginning of the eleventh century, Europeans have simultaneously feared and romanticized them. That ambiguity has contributed to centuries of confusion over the origins, culture, and identity of the Romanies, a confusion that too often has resulted in marginalization, persecution, and scapegoating. The Role of the Romaniesbrings together international experts on Romany culture from the fields of history, sociology, linguistics, and anthropology to address the many questions and problems raised by the vexed relationship between Romany and European cultures. The book's first section considers the genesis, development, and scope of the field of Romany studies, while the second part expands from there to consider constructions of Romany culture and identity. Part three focuses on twentieth-century literary representations of Romany life, while the final part considers how the role of the Romanies will ultimately be remembered and recorded. Loanwords in the World's Languages
This book is the first work to address the question of what kinds of words get borrowed in a systematic and comparative perspective. It studies lexical borrowing behavior on the basis of a world-wide sample of 40 languages, both major languages and minor languages, and both languages with heavy borrowing and languages with little lexical influence from other languages. The interest in Romani, the language of the Roma or "Gypsies", has grown considerably in recent years. Romani has drawn attention from a.o. grammarians, sociolinguists, Indologists, language contact researchers, language planners, educators, typologists and historical linguists.This Indic language is spoken by between five and ten million people world-wide. The bibliography also covers two other Indic languages spoken by peripatetic groups, Dom or Domari from the Middle East, and Lomavren or Bosha of Eastern Turkey and Armenia.The bibliography contains over 2500 titles in more than thirty languages, published between 1900 to 2003. English translations are provided for all titles written in less common languages. There are indexes for general and linguistic terms, Romani varieties, other languages and geographical terms.The book further contains a very useful "Guide to Romani Linguistics", which should enable newcomers to enter this highly interesting field by pointing to the essential titles in different subject areas.
Grammatical Relations in Romani
This is the first typologically-oriented collection on Romani that is devoted to a particular thematic domain that of noun phrase grammar. The approach taken is unique in that it places this typologically hybrid language in the centre of a general linguistic, universal discussion of the relevant noun phrase phenomena. The book is also the first assembly of articles to deal with Romani as a whole on the basis of cross-dialectal samples, offering areal-typological, dialectological, and historicalinterpretations. The individual contributions discuss morphological and syntactic aspects of nominal and pronominal inflection, definite articles, demonstratives, genitive compounding, external possession, pronominal object doubling and morphosyntactic alignment. Narativní monografie představuje životní příběh romské pěstounky Anny, která přijala do péče děti ze širší rodiny, které byly v biologické rodině hrubě zanedbávány a vystaveny sexuálnímu zneužívání. Kapitola navazující na narativní biografii představuje tradice romského rodu Sinti, které do značné míry ovlivňují to, jak se Anna problémy v rodině řešila. Výklad je rámován představením romské problematiky v ČR v jejím historickém kontextu, následně reflexí realizované sociální práce v rodinách pěstounky a biologických rodičů. Text je určen zejména pracovníkům v pomáhajících profesích, kdy má pomáhat nabourat jejich stereotypy spojené s Romy a ukázat příklad dobré praxe realizované sociální práce.
