DER KAMPF IN DEN BERGEN DER SÜDFRONT Eines der wichtigsten und interessantesten Kapitel der Tiroler Landesgeschichte in der Zeit des Ersten Weltkriegs. Durch den Kriegseintritt Italiens 1915 wird die 350 km lange Grenze vom Stilfser Joch bis Kärnten zur Kampflinie. Ehe die Kaiserjäger und Landesschützen von den Kriegsschauplätzen im Osten zurückbeordert werden können, müssen Marsch-, Landsturm- und Reservebataillone zusammen mit Standschützenformationen die Tiroler Grenzberge halten. Bei den Kämpfen im Cristallo- und Drei-Zinnen-Gebiet versuchen die Italiener, ins nahe Pustertal durchzubrechen. Dabei bildet der Monte Piano einen wichtigen Stützpunkt der Dolomitenfront. Kurz nach Kriegsbeginn von Tiroler Einheiten besetzt, wird er auch in schwierigsten Gefechtslagen gehalten, bis die Italiener 1917 das Gebiet räumen. Die Kämpfe im Drei-Zinnen-Gebiet und am Kreuzberg in Sexten 1915-1917
GENERALMAJOR VIKTOR SCHEMFIL Der Verfasser, als Regimentsadjutant der Tiroler Kaiserjäger selbst am südlichen Kriegsschauplatz, schildert die Grenzschutzvorbereitungen, die Angriffs- und Verteidigungspläne und die Kampfhandlungen im Drei-Zinnen- und Kreuzberggebiet bis zum Abzug der italienischen Truppen im Herbst 1917. Neben zahlreichen anderen Episoden beleuchtet er insbesondere das tragisch verlaufene Paternkofel-Unternehmen des Sextener Bergführers Sepp Innerkofler, der mit Freunden als "fliegende Patrouille" rastlos Gipfel um Gipfel bestieg und dort ins Blickfeld des Gegners zu gelangen suchte, um ihm den Anschein zu vermitteln, alle diese Berge seien österreichisch besetzt und gesichert (vgl. auch Schlern-Schriften 273).
