Abstract: A highly educated and skilled workforce has been an important driver of productivity performance and prosperity in Belgium. This paper examines skills policies that could help improve productivity and inclusiveness. An increased focus on lifelong learning, improved and more flexible working conditions for older workers, and a more efficient allocation of students and skills would benefit productivity growth. Improving inclusiveness requires increasing access and participation in tertiary education, especially for students with disadvantaged backgrounds. Digitalisation holds the promise of large gains in labour productivity, but is disrupting the nature of employment relationships. It calls for measures that encourage information and communication technology (ICT) upskilling and for adapting tax and benefit systems to the rise of on-demand jobs linked to the use of e-platforms
This book makes a compelling case for better international equity indicators in education. A conceptual framework for a system of comparable indicators is proposed and a spectrum of findings and perspectives presented. Topics include: the sociology of equality and equity in education; the application of theories of justice to educational equity, the trade-off between effectiveness and equity, heterogeneous versus homogeneous classrooms, and the influence of parental education.
Improving the performance of youth on the labor market is a crucial challenge in OECD countries facing persistent youth unemployment. As labor markets become more and more selective, a lack of relevant skills brings a higher risk of unemployment. Whatever the level of qualification, first experiences on the labor market have a profound influence on later working life. Ageing without Ageism? contributes to the essential and timely discussion of age, ageism, population ageing, and public policy.
