Invitation to Didactique

This is an introduction to a Didactique, research program that has been going on in France since the '70s and whose importance is now widely recognized, but whose content is still not easy access to anglophones. The work of Dr. Guy Brousseau has remained largely, in his native France, untranslated and largely unknown. This book will unlock the secrets of Didactique and provide an opportunity for researchers, teacher educators, and students to learn of this important methodology. The field of Didactique is rich, deep and extensive. To a large extent, it owes its shape and even its existence to the energy and inspiration poured in by Guy Brousseau starting in the 1960's. Many others have si...

Teaching Fractions through Situations: A Fundamental Experiment

This work presents one of the original and fundamental experiments of Didactique, a research program whose underlying tenet is that Mathematics Education research should be solidly based on scientific observation. Here the observations are of a series of adventures that were astonishing for both the students and the teachers: the reinvention of fractions and of decimal numbers in a sequence of lessons and situations that permitted the students to construct the concepts for themselves. The book leads the reader through the highlights of the sequence's structure and some of the reasoning behind the lesson choices. It then presents explanations of some of the principal concepts of the Theory of Situations. In the process, it offers the reader the opportunity to join a lively set of fifth graders as they experience a particularly attractive set of lessons and master a topic that baffles many of their contemporaries.

This brief has a twofold motivation. One is to present an organization, Washington Teachers of Teachers of Mathematics (WaToToM) that has become a solid player in the arena of mathematics education in the state of Washington and has aspects that might be of value to people with similar goals in other states. The other is to present a history in grassroots development. WaToToM had its origins 15 years ago as a small gathering whose direction was not clearly defined. From those small roots it has grown not to an enormous organization but to a lively, goal-oriented and highly functional one that has had profound influences on educational policy, curriculum development and teacher preparation.

Didactique is a research program in mathematics education that was launched in France in the 60's and now engages many researchers from graduate students to senior professors. Until the 90's almost none of its ideas and results were available to Anglophones. Since that time a book and some articles have been published in English, but they tend to be accessible only to those who already have some expertise in mathematics education. This book is designed for the interested non-expert, or alternatively the expert who would like to hit the high spots of Didactique swiftly. My hope is to pique the interest of both sufficiently to entice them into digging farther.

Theory of Didactical Situations in Mathematics

This book is unique. It gathers texts which give the best presentation of the principles and key concepts of the Theory of Didactical Situations that Guy Brousseau developed in the period from 1970 to 1990. These texts provide a comprehensive presentation of the Theory. In order to facilitate the reading of certain points footnotes have been added, as well as preludes and interludes to place in context the chosen texts and clarify the construction of the book.
