Vonnie Roudette has created a seminal work of Caribbean Nature writings revealing creative messages for community transformation through daily observation. Compiled largely from five-minute weekly radio commentaries that were aired in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on the WEFM Radio Viewpoint program between June 2004-June 2009, The Nature of Belonging is a Collection of Short Essays that are beautifully interspersed with Roudettes poetic drawings and meditations on Nature. Through The Nature of Belonging, Roudette seeks to facilitate personal healing from social and cultural programming through the practical application of resilient natural wisdom that nurtures cooperative relationships wit...

FINALIST, GOVERNOR GENERAL'S LITERARY AWARD Through luminescent light, ancestral paths, and a Caribbean spirit-inflected world, Naniki explores the musings and inner workings of the deep blue — the Caribbean Sea — and its shape-shifting sea beings. As the sea mirrors the light from the blue skies, and its depths are exposed by daggers of sunlight, so too Naniki reveals and honours the Indigenous roots of the Caribbean and its people, whose destiny is tied to the sea, the vessel of collective memory. Amana and Skelele are made of water and air, their essence intertwined with Taino and African ancestry. They evolved as elemental beings of the Anthropocene, and shape-shifting with their naniki (active spirits) or animal avatars, they begin an archipelagic journey throughout the Caribbean Basin to see the strange future they dreamed of. Until devastation erupts. Tasked by their elders to go back in time to the source of the First People’s knowledge, they must surmount historical and mythological challenges alike. How can they navigate and overcome these obstacles to regenerate themselves, their love, their islands, and their seas? A RARE MACHINES BOOK

Caribbean Strategy for Climate-Resilient Forests and Rural Livelihoods

The Caribbean Strategy for Climate-Resilient Forests and Rural Livelihoods matches prioritised forestry initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling with suitable funding streams. It also identifies possible regional and national partners for project development and execution. While the strategy is focused on forest resources management, it also emphasises poverty alleviation and food security in line with FAO’s Strategic Objectives. The strategy also has a gender and youth focus in addition to an emphasis on ecosystem services to support agricultural systems. Overall, the strategy can be thought of as a roadmap to mobilise investment for specific priority initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling of climate resilience actions in the Caribbean forestry sector.

Frontiers of the Caribbean

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book argues that the Caribbean frontier, usually assumed to have been eclipsed after colonial conquest, remains a powerful but unrecognised element of Caribbean island culture. Combining analytical and creative genres of writing, it explores historical and contemporary patterns of frontier change through a case study of the little-known Eastern Caribbean multi-island state of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Modern frontier traits are located in the wandering woodcutter, the squatter on government land and the mountainside ganja grower. But the frontier is also identified as part of global production that has shaped island tourism, the financial sector and patterns of migration.
