Pioneering on the Congo

William Holman Bentley (1855-1905) was a missionary who spent twenty-one years in the area of the Congo. Originally published in 1900, these two volumes document the pioneering work of travellers to the area between 1879 and 1899. During that time it progressed from being virtually unexplored to a fully charted region with government officers, traders and missionaries operating far and wide. As the only foreign witness to the entire period, Bentley provides an authoritative account of the dramatic developments he observed in the Congo's geography, culture, religion and commerce. Volume 1 sets the discussion within a historical context, and moves on to recount the missionaries' objectives and their effect on the native tribes. Finishing by revealing the important discovery of a new route to the upper river, it presents a unique and insightful study that remains relevant to geographers, ethnologists and historians alike.

The authors examine the interaction of missionary organizations with local political powers and with their home government, arguing that in trying to decide which course of action to pursue, missionaries became knowledgeable students of imperial politics and the shifting state of international affairs. They show that leadership of British missionary societies was split between those who wanted to be treated without favouritism by the British government and those who had more aggressive expectations. In doing so they explore the pressures that contributed to the formation of imperial policy and perspective during a significant period of the evolution of the British empire.

No Protocol For Me

Maurice Harvey is probably the most widely travelled photojournalist from New Zealand, having been to 160 countries and territories. His travels began in Africa in 1960 where for seven years he lived in Central and West Africa, then in later years, paid numerous visits covering 37 countries of the continent. The independence movement was sweeping Africa bringing with it not just freedom and liberty, but in far too many cases, injustice and hardship. In 1979 he became the official photojournalist of the United Bible Societies, the world’s largest publishing organisation, a position he held for nearly 20 years. His other photography has been used by many of the world’s leading publishers s...
