School-Based Drug Prevention

School-based drug prevention, popular with the public and politicians alike, is now a nearly universal experience for American youth. Analysis has shown that the best programs can reduce use of a wide range of substances. But questions remain regarding how to think about and, hence, fund, these programs. Should they be viewed principally as weapons in the war against illicit drugs, or, at the other extreme, do prevention programs benefit students and society most by reducing use of alcohol and tobacco? The authors address these questions by comparing for the first time the social benefits of school-based prevention programs' long-run impacts on a diverse set of different substances.

The Relationship Between Family Structure and Adolescent Substance Use

This study uses data from approximately 22,000 respondents to the 1991, 1992, and 1993 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. Particular topics explored include: the particular family types that are most highly associated with adolescent substance use, dependence, and the need for treatment; the interaction between gender, race, ethnicity and family structure in substance abuse; the effects of family structure on type and pattern of substance use; and the effect of the gender of the custodial parent on the risk of substance use. Tables, references, and a technical appendix.

This book provides essential information on the epidemiology, molecular and genetic features, anti-CCR4 antibody therapy and a nationwide study of transplantation on human T-leukemia virus type-I (HTLV-1) and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). This rare but important disease has restricted endemic areas and distinct clinical features such as a high frequency of hypercalcemia, strong predisposition to infection and poor response to chemotherapy, aspects which set ATL apart from other types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Given the small number of patients, enrollment in clinical trials has not been feasible, and establishing treatment standard has been difficult but new evidence, such as results of nationwide studies on transplantation, have shown new insights and potential treatments. Based on recent evidence, the book presents new treatment methods for ATL and infection prevention of HTLV-1, enabling clinicians, researchers and post-docs specializing in hematology and virology to gain a valuable overview of the disease.

Barriers to Reentry?

With the introduction of more aggressive policing, prosecution, and sentencing since the late 1970s, the number of Americans in prison has increased dramatically. While many have credited these "get tough" policies with lowering violent crime rates, we are only just beginning to understand the broader costs of mass incarceration. In Barriers to Reentry? experts on labor markets and the criminal justice system investigate how imprisonment affects ex-offenders' employment prospects, and how the challenge of finding work after prison affects the likelihood that they will break the law again and return to prison. The authors examine the intersection of imprisonment and employment from many vanta...

Prevalence of Substance Use Among Racial and Ethnic Subgroups in the United States, 1991-1993

Analyzes racial/ethnic patterns of substance use in the U.S. using a more detailed classification of race/ethnicity than has been possible in previous reports that used the Nat. Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). It combines data from 3 large nat. surveys, the Ô91, Ô92, and Ô93 NHSDAs, to estimate the prevalence of substance use, alcohol dependence, and need for illicit drug abuse treatment within 11 racial/ethnic subgroups: Native Amer., Asian/Pacific Islanders, non-Hispanic blacks, non-Hispanic whites, and 7 Hispanic subgroups: Caribbeans, Cubans, Mexicans, Central Amer., Puerto Ricans, South Amer., and other Hispanics.

Neighborhood and Life Chances

Does the place where you lived as a child affect your health as an adult? To what degree does your neighbor's success influence your own potential? The importance of place is increasingly recognized in urban research as an important variable in understanding individual and household outcomes. Place matters in education, physical health, crime, violence, housing, family income, mental health, and discrimination—issues that determine the quality of life, especially among low-income residents of urban areas. Neighborhood and Life Chances: How Place Matters in Modern America brings together researchers from a range of disciplines to present the findings of studies in the fields of education, h...
