"In the summer of 1938, nine year old Walter Roth arrived in Chicago with his immediate family after they escaped Nazi Germany. Growing up in Hyde Park, he was a typical American immigrant teen. However, a trip in 1953 to the town in which he grew up in Germany proved to be a turning point on what would begin a lifelong journey exploring his roots. His next visit to Germany accelerated his research relating to his ancestors and the Roth family history in Germany. This project grew into an objective of creating a memorial in Walter's village to commemorate the Jews who had been murdered during the Holocaust. Walter explores this history, specifically that of his family, through memories, experiences and dozens of letters from his family trapped in Germany. He looks at growing up in Chicago as a Jewish immigrant with relatives in Germany and the effect that had on his family living in Hyde Park. He also discusses his continued involvement with his village, Roth, and his trips with his wife, children, and grandchildren to explore his family's tragic past"--P. [4] of cover.

This is a brilliant history of anthropology from its origins in 19th century Europe to the present day. Underlying this and closely connected to this meta-narrative is the story of European settlement and colonialization of Australia and the distressing history of Australian official policy towards the Australian aboriginal population (other colonial enterprises are also examined; for instance, the book incorporates a discussion of the late 19th century development of American cultural anthropology and its relation to the European settlement of North America). He shows how anthropological theory emerged from the political and intellectual culture of Victorian England (and to a lesser extent Germany and the United States) and examines its relationship to science, particularly evolutionary science.

Roth Time

Sculptor, poet, diarist, graphic designer, pioneer artist's book maker, performer, publisher, musician, and, most of all, provocateur, Dieter Roth has long been beloved as an artist's artist. Known for his mistrust of all art institutions and commercial galleries--he once referred to museums as funeral homes--he was also known for his generosity to friends, his collaborative spirit, and for including his family in his art making. Much to the frustration of any gallery that tried to exhibit his work (supposedly none more than once), Roth thumbed his nose at those who valued high purpose and permanence in art. Constantly trying to undo his art education, he would set up systems that discourage...
