A Descriptive Case Study of the Mathematically Connected Communities Professional Learning Model
This research project analyzed the Mathematically Connected Communities (MC2) model and documented the change in the model between 2012 and 2017. Case study research was chosen as the methodology. The data that informed the case study were publicly accessible annual project reports and participant evaluations of professional learning. The focus of the study revolved around the three research topics: the evolution of the MC2 model; the reasons for the changing model; and what teachers perceived to be useful and applicable from summer professional learning during different years of the project. By studying the MC2 model as it evolved over time, the variations of the model and the resulting influence on teacher learning and practice were described. Evidence to study the evolution of MC2 and its influence on teachers practice included archival project data from 2012-2017. The study showed how large scale professional learning can become embedded in classroom practice, why job-embedded professional learning is more effective than traditional professional development workshops, and why different components of systemic support must be included in the professional learning design.
