Declarative languages build on sound theoretical bases to provide attractive frameworks for application development. These languages have been succe- fully applied to a wide variety of real-world situations including database m- agement, active networks, software engineering, and decision-support systems. New developments in theory and implementation expose fresh opportunities. At the same time, the application of declarative languages to novel problems raises numerous interesting research issues. These well-known questions include scalability, language extensions for application deployment, and programming environments. Thus, applications drive the progress in the theory and imp- mentation of declarative systems, and in turn bene?t from this progress. The International Symposium on Practical Applications of Declarative L- guages (PADL) provides a forum for researchers, practitioners, and implementors of declarative languages to exchange ideas on current and novel application - eas and on the requirements for e?ective use of declarative systems. The fourth PADL symposium was held in Portland, Oregon, on January 19 and 20, 2002.

This volume contains ten papers selected from among those presented at the annual Free University Stemmatological Colloquia 1990-93. Current issues in (automated) stemmatology, paleography and codicology are addressed from contemporary theoretical perspectives. All papers focus on new directions in textuology and manuscript affiliation, and especially on the use of computer science in this field.The theoretical implications of computer-assisted stemma construction are explored. In combination with achievements in codicology and paleography, these investigations allow for dealing with the major problems in textuology: extreme complex and entangled manuscript traditions. Following an introductory chapter, part 1 presents six theoretical contributions on stemmatology, and part 2 deals with auxiliary fields in textuology, such as codicology and paleography. In part 3 applications of the previously developed fields are presented.
MacClade is a computer program for graphic and interactive analysis of phylogeny and character evolution for Apple Macintosh computers. It displays a cladogram and paints the branches to indicate reconstructed character evolution. The user can manipulate cladograms on screen as MacClade gives diagnostic feedback. Systematics and other evolutionary biologists can use its flexible and analytical tools to examine phylogenies or interpret character evolution in a phylogenetic context, yet its ease of use should allow students to grasp phylogenetic principles in an interactive environment.
