Negotiating about Perceived Value Differences in Mathematics Teaching
This paper reports on a qualitative research study exploring the socialisation experiences of immigrant secondary mathematics teachers practising in Australia. Teacher perception of differences in the ways their respective home and the Australian (host) cultures value aspects of mathematics teaching and learning was observed to lead to dissonance. Their negotiation about these differences highlighted the role played by personally-held values. Although each teacher participant adopts different approaches to mediate the different perceived value differences, the inclusive approaches of amalgamation and appropriation were most widely adopted. Implications towards optimising mathematics pedagogy, and towards meaningful professional support for mathematics teachers in transition, are suggested. (Contains 1 table.) Affect and Mathematics Education
This open access book, inspired by the ICME 13 topic study group “Affect, beliefs and identity in mathematics education”, presents the latest trends in research in the area. Following an introduction and a survey chapter providing a concise overview of the state-of-art in the field of mathematics-related affect, the book is divided into three main sections: motivation and values, engagement, and identity in mathematics education. Each section comprises several independent chapters based on original research, as well as a reflective commentary by an expert in the area. Collectively, the chapters present a rich methodological spectrum, from narrative analysis to structural equation modelling. What Australian Primary School Students Value in Mathematics Learning
Grades 5/6 students in Melbourne reported the valuing of "achievement," "open-endedness," "relevance," "humanism," "ICT," and "openness" most in mathematics learning. Although prior research suggested that students in East Asia valued "achievement" most as well, there was an observed difference in the nature of this valuing in Australia. Knowledge of what students value reveals the pedagogical potential of values, and also allows teachers to identify values related to effective mathematics learning. Values alignment facilitates further work with these values.
