Admixture Dynamics, Natural Selection and Diseases in Admixed Populations

In this thesis, Dr. Jin presents the distribution of ancestral chromosomal segments in the admixed genome, which could provide the information needed to explore population admixture dynamics. The author derives accurate population histories of African Americans and Mexicans using genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) data. Mapping the genetic background facilitates the study of natural selection in the admixed population, and the author identifies the signals of selection in African Americans since their African ancestors left for America. He further demonstrates that many of the selection signals were associated with African American-specific high-risk diseases such as prostate cancer and hypertension, suggesting an important role these disease-related genes might have played in adapting to their new environment. Lastly, the author reveals the complexity of natural selection in shaping human susceptibility to disease. The thesis significantly advances our understanding of the recent population admixture, adaptation to local environment and its health implications.

Studies in Population Genetics

This book deals with central concepts in population genetics, describing the main evolutionary processes that influence the allele frequency distribution and change. The different chapters discuss topics such as population size and structure, migration, inbreeding and interbreeding, mechanisms of extinction and speciation, along with different data techniques and molecular methods used for detecting DNA sequence variation in the study of genetic polymorphisms. Part of the book includes statistical and computational methods commonly used to process population genetics data, which constitute an essential tool for understanding the concepts discussed. The book will be a useful reference for graduate students and researchers working on population genetics, and other related areas including microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, ecology, anthropology and others.

Written by Feng Menglong 冯梦龙, the Complete Works of Brainpower (智囊全集, Zhi Nang Quan Ji) was first compiled in 1626 or the Sixth Year of Tianqi in Ming Dynasty. It contains more than 1200 stories of brainpower and intelligence from the Pre-Qin Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. There are twenty-eight sub-categories of wisdom, sagacity, courage, tact, wisdom, language, military, boudoir and so on. This book records the history of creation and practice of Chinese wisdom. The characters in the book are all using wisdom and strategy to create history. It is not only a magic book reflecting the ancient people's ingenious use of wisdom to solve problems and overcome enemies, but also a huge intellectual treasure in the history of Chinese culture.
