In the 1890s the Apollo Iron and Steel Company ended a bitterly contested labor dispute by hiring replacement workers from the surrounding countryside. To avoid future unrest, however, the company sought to gain tighter control over its workers not only at the factory but also in their homes. Drawing upon a philosophy of reform movements in Europe and the United States, the firm decided that providing workers with good housing and a good urban environment would make them more loyal and productive. In 1895, Apollo Iron and Steel built a new, integrated, non-unionized steelworks and hired the nation's preeminent landscape architectural firm (Olmsted, Olmsted, and Eliot) to design the model ind...

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Rare Facial Clefts and Clinical Facial Appearance

This book explores craniofacial anatomical variations using photographic images, three-dimensional images, and computed tomography reconstruction, giving the reader a better understanding of the craniofacial structures involved in each type of facial cleft, their phenotypic variations, and their associations with other rare facial clefts. This will also aid the visualization of the relationship between tissue and bone changes. This book, through providing in-depth knowledge of the morphology of rare facial clefts, aims to contribute towards the establishment of personalized and individualized therapeutic practices in highly complex cases of facial clefts, and the improvement of the rehabilitation process for the patients.

Problem-Based Learning Online

“This book makes a great shot at disentangling the challenge of the diversity of learning technologies and their intricate association with pedagogical approaches. The terms used by the book – combining, uniting and interrelationships – in some ways underplay the major challenges it poses. Have a good read of it – and most importantly try out some ideas.” Gilly Salmon, Professor of E-learning & Learning Technologies, Beyond Distance Research Alliance “This [book] represents a significant collection of papers which, I am sure, will help inform the development of an online pedagogy for problem-based learning.” Michael Prosser, Director Research and Evaluation, Higher Education Ac...

Craniofacial Sutures

Sutures are more than just fibrous joints between the bones in our skull. They are active growth sites that influence the development, growth and shaping of our face and cranium. When suture development is disrupted, craniosynostosis can result, a condition which is characterized by the premature closure of one or more cranial sutures before brain growth is complete and leads to an abnormally shaped skull. In this publication, leading experts in the field, both researchers and clinicians, discuss suture morphogenesis from developmental, evolutionary and genetic perspectives. In addition, an appraisal of the molecular etiology, clinical presentation and treatment of craniosynostosis is presented, as well as an outlook to future areas of study and to innovative therapeutic philosophies. In this volume craniofacial developmental and evolutionary biologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists as well as pediatric and plastic surgeons will find a wealth of recent information on the field of craniofacial development, deformity and its treatment.

Twenty years after NAFTA, the consensus seems to be that the regional project in North America is dead. The trade agreement was never followed up by new institutions that might cement a more ambitious regional community. The Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), launched with some fanfare in 2005, was quietly discontinued in 2009. And new cooperative ventures like the US‐Canada Beyond the Border talks and the US‐Mexico Merida Initiative suggest that the three governments have reverted to the familiar, pre‐NAFTA pattern of informal, incremental bilateralism. One could argue, however, that NAFTA itself has been buried, and yet the region somehow lives on, albeit in a form very diffe...

Examining four major institutions, Michele Strong considers the experiences of working men and women, particularly artisans, but also young apprentices and clerks, who travelled abroad as participants in an educational reform movement spearheaded by middle-class liberals.
