Sir John Beresford Letter on British Military Strategy During the War of 1812
Letter from Commodore John Beresford of the British Royal Navy to an unidentified correspondent regarding British military strategy during the War of 1812, fought between the United States and its Indigenous allies and the United Kingdom, its Indigenous allies in British North America, and Spain in Florida. Beresford shares his support for the Royal Navy's continued blockade on the United States' maritime trade. He suggests, however, that the British should penetrate more deeply inland to the Mississippi River, where he believes Indigenous populations could be persuaded to join the British cause against the Americans.
