The collection comprises papers relating to the life and career of William John Edwards. The bulk of the papers relate to his work as a Minister of the Church of England and include papers from his appointments as Rector of St Augustine's, Bulli and Rector of St James Church, Sydney; a large group of sermons spanning forty years; subject files and cuttings on issues of religion and Forms of Service for both specific religious services and for special commemorative services. A smaller group of papers relate to his World War I service; his time as Headmaster of Canberra Grammar School; his appointment as Chief of the UNICEF Mission to Greece, Italy and Malta and a visit to the United States of America as a delegate to the 9th International Conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations.

William Edwards (1772-1830) was a son of John Edwards and Ann Griffiths, and a grandson of John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth. William married Margaret Perkin in 1797, and they lived in Welshpool and in Berriew, Montgomeryshire, Wales. Descendants and relatives lived in Wales, England, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere.
