Asian Absences

This contemplative and lyrical narrative of a journey from Copenhagen to Eastern Asia evades simple conclusions to vividly capture the conflicting emotional and intellectual responses of a stranger in distant lands, evoking both the exotic wonder and threatening otherness of unfamiliar cultures and repeatedly challenging mythic assumptions about the East. Via an abandoned hospital for lepers, a hallucinogenic mountain pilgrimage with shamans in Kathmandu, and the "beautifully odd" curiositiesof Tokyo's metropolis, Wolfgang Büscher takes his reader on a journey of enlightenment that is both troubling and beautiful. Wolfgang Büscher is an award-winning journalist who writes for theFrankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, among others. He won the Theodor-Wolff Prize for Reportage in 2002.

The Face of God

"Best-selling journalist, historian and author Paul Badde embarks on an exciting quest to discover the truth behind the Holy Face of Manoppello, a relic recently rediscovered and rumored to be the veil of Veronica...Badde was intrigued when he heard of a mysterious image in a remote Italian village--an image of a man's face on byssus cloth. Byssus, or sea silk, is a rare and delicate fabric woven from a silky filament produced by mollusks. It is claimed that the fabric is so thin and delicate that it is impossible to paint on--yet the image in Manoppello is clearly visible, and when laid over the image of the face on the Shroud of Turin, forms a perfect match..."--Dust cover flap.

Fairness in Intellectual Property Law

This book contends that the concept of fairness should be embraced and developed as a middle ground between strictly utilitarian and fundamental rights-based approaches to intellectual property (IP) law. Annette Kur, Nari Lee and Anna Tischner provide elegant arguments as to why this should be the case, and offer insights into how the operation of fairness as a legal notion can fulfil the role of mediator between the property aspects of IP law, market regulation and general welfare.

The post-September 11th security policies of Poland, the UK, France, the US and Germany presented in this new book illustrate how and why the Atlantic community ruptured over Iraq, a result in part, it is argued, of the existence of particular national strategic cultures. Whilst the longer term effects of Iraq for the transatlantic security agenda have yet to fully transpire, what is certain is that the EU's ambitions to become a credible security actor have been seriously questioned, as has the notion of multilateralism as an international norm, as has the function of international law. The book addresses these issues by considering the evolution of the EU's role in the world and the development of American perspectives on the transatlantic security agenda. This volume was previously published as a special issue of the journal European Security.
