Through the Honors College at FIU, undergraduate students conducted extensive research using art and propaganda objects from the Wolfsonian-FIU MuseumÕs Research Library located in Miami Beach to produce this book. Objects were selected based upon both aesthetic power and their ability to convey meaning about changing socio-political values. The Wolfsonian was founded in 1986 to exhibit, document and preserve an assemblage of 100,000 objects, including furniture and other decorative arts, paintings, books, prints and ephemera. Objects of propaganda are of particular interest in the museumÕs collection. The seminarÕs research papers have been combined into publication to be included in the collections of major research and archival libraries for further scholarly investigation. Essay topics range from ÒHow the Architecture of Italy and Morocco Influenced 20th Century U.S. ArchitectureÓ to ÒThe Connection between Art and Science in the Changing Views of the Human Body in the MediterraneanÓ. The sixteen essays have been complied into one beautiful publication. This research was selected for presentation at the 2007 Nation Collegiate Honors Council Research Conference in Denver.

Precarities of 21st Century Childhoods

This book locates internally focused, critical perspectives regarding the social, political, emotional, and mental growth of children. Through the radical openness afforded by psychoanalytic and related frameworks, this volume illuminates, promotes, and helps situate subjectivities that are often blotted out for both the child and society. The overall emphasis is on motifs of lostness and foundness, in terms of the geographies of the psycho-social, and how such motifs govern and regulate what have come to count as the normative indexes of childhood as well as how they exclude other real childhoods.

To what extent do board games represent the social context of their production? How might they reinforce or subvert normative ideas of community and fulfillment? In Playing Place, Chad Randl and D. Medina Lasansky have curated a collection of thirty-seven fascinating essays, s...

Acts of Possession

The success of internet auction sites like eBay and the cult status of public television's Antiques Roadshow attest to the continued popularity of collecting in American culture. Acts of Possession investigates the ways cultural meanings of collections have evolved and yet remained surprisingly unchanged throughout American history. Drawing upon the body of theoretical work on collecting and focusing on individual as opposed to museum collections, the contributors investigate how, what, and why Americans have collected and explore the inherent meanings behind systems of organization and display. Essays consider the meanings of Thomas Jefferson's Indian Hall at Monticello; the pedagogical the...
